Yes you can bolt any L61 head to any ECO block.

They arent all exactly the same though, ealry style ones had cassette ignition, power steering mounts and egr provisions, later 1st design heads lost the egr provision, 2nd design heads have redesigned exhaust ports, COP ignition, cam sensor , no egr and no powersteering mounts

Damn this keyboard cover suck I am having a really hard time typing without errors

the reason i ask is because i need to start work on improving my cylinder head but still be able to have my car to drive so say if i have an 07 L61 cobalt and find a earlier L61 head at a junk yard will i have to have more stuf other than the head for it to properly work or will it do just the way it is?

If youve got an 07, and you need the car to continue to work properly with just a simple head swap, youre gonna need another 2nd design(07-08) head, its probably under $600 with valves and springs for a brand new stock head.

To clarify: You can use any head on an 05-06 cobalt, they will all bolt up and work with just modifications to make sure you can secure the ignition module.

On an 07-08 that is still using the factory computer you have to use an 07-08 head for everything to function properly/bolt up without massive mods.

The heads and blocks dont care what they are bolted to, but the ignition systems and computer controls do care.

ok this is what im exactly wanting to do. i will be ordering a totally new valve train through ferrea and porting the head, and if im using the same stock electronics for now. it is possible that all i have to do is take the original off and place the new one on and hook up to the stock ignition?

can you use a pre 07 head with an 07 valve cover for the ignition? that seems like it could work

not sure if the cam sensor is an issue though with an older head

Yeah so you need to get a new head, port it, build it up with your valvetrain and cams of choice, then just take off the original and bolt on the new one. This is nowhwere near as complicated logistically as weve been making it seem.

Get a head for your car and build it. install it.

May I offer some input here?

As Maven as told you, you will need to use an 07 or newer head for the direct swap. I had to buy a new head once and even at a bargain price it was still $1000, so I would love to know where he got it for $600 (Maven?)

If you are only planning on doing the head, the GM parts head gasket kit comes complete with new hardware. But I would recommend using studs for your reassembly.

If you can find a salvage engine, that would be a good idea. Get the whole engine and build that. Head, rods, pistons, all at once. It will ultimately save you money if your plan included doing that later anyway.

you said the heads were physically the same, therefore any cover should bolt to it
