soo this is the new VVT engine hmm is there anything different besides the block about the 2.2 vvt?

Its got a different block, pistons, head, cams, cam gears, intake manifold, camshaft cover than the L61. The LAP is essentially a 2.2L LE5

so stronger?

so stronger?

No. The only differences are to accomodate the VVT.

jw do you hear a ticking noise of the vvt while you are driving it ?

VVT is unrelated to direct injection (which has a ticking noise), nor is it like VTEC where it kicks in at a certain RPM. VVT is inaudible.

Maven, why does VVT add 5 hp but take away 5 tq over the L61? Is there even a point?

That noise is probably the common operating noise of any ecotec engine. They're noisy.

ahh ok i just thought id ask because i wasnt sure

The 5hp gain AND the torque loss are both likely contributable to the intake manifold, it uses the new 2nd design LE5 intake.

Even though it loses a little peak torque it does have more "under the curve" the torque curv on the LAP is significantly flatter than the L61.

The reason for VVT is emissions and fuel economy.

why would a new block and pistons be needed?

I would say just a whole new design, and it seems like every manufacturer is all about emissions and MPG.....well I guess they have to be. :)

Props to the 2.2 guys and sad to see the 2.4 go in the SS.

 No they arent, chevy 350's are noisy, solid lifter Hondas are noisy, the ECOs are quiet.

The 2.4L LE5 is significantly smoother and quieter in operation than the LD9 2.4L it replaced, of that I'm sure.

A a different block is used on the LAP as compared the L61 because the VVT oil feed circuits are integrated into the block. The camshaft actuators have a dedicated oil feed, they DO NOT use the same feed as the rest of the valvetrain.

The VVT actuators each(Intake and exhaust) recieve their own oil feed through large(8mm or so, as compared to the 1.5mm passage for the valvetrain) ports in the surface of the blcok deck, these ports are located at front of engine, between the front bulkhead and the #1 cylinder. The valvetrain gets its oil from a passage at the back left of engine, behind #4.

Pistons are still cast relatively low strength pieces like in the L61 but they have revised faces to account for the additional open time of the valves(theyve got bigger valve reliefs)

Read under his user name, he's a tech and you could find most of this out by Google or probably the GM site. :)

so its not an on/off system? its a linear syetem then? does it work depending on rpm and load?

I dont know what you mean by linear, but thats not accurate.

Its constantly variable. It can retard and advance intake and exhaust timing, it Basically unless your at WOT or idle, it working. and yes It does different things at different times depending on load, rpm , throttle position, engine temp, etc...

ok, i understand, thank you. its like the vvt on jags.
