VVT is unrelated to direct injection (which has a ticking noise), nor is it like VTEC where it kicks in at a certain RPM. VVT is inaudible.
Maven, why does VVT add 5 hp but take away 5 tq over the L61? Is there even a point?

Even though it loses a little peak torque it does have more "under the curve" the torque curv on the LAP is significantly flatter than the L61.
The reason for VVT is emissions and fuel economy.

A a different block is used on the LAP as compared the L61 because the VVT oil feed circuits are integrated into the block. The camshaft actuators have a dedicated oil feed, they DO NOT use the same feed as the rest of the valvetrain.
The VVT actuators each(Intake and exhaust) recieve their own oil feed through large(8mm or so, as compared to the 1.5mm passage for the valvetrain) ports in the surface of the blcok deck, these ports are located at front of engine, between the front bulkhead and the #1 cylinder. The valvetrain gets its oil from a passage at the back left of engine, behind #4.
Pistons are still cast relatively low strength pieces like in the L61 but they have revised faces to account for the additional open time of the valves(theyve got bigger valve reliefs)

Its constantly variable. It can retard and advance intake and exhaust timing, it Basically unless your at WOT or idle, it working. and yes It does different things at different times depending on load, rpm , throttle position, engine temp, etc...
