which axle side gets destroyed??

When people break an axle at the drag strip, or even on the street, is there usually one side or the other that breaks?? Is this something that could be repaired at the track if it happens?? I was thinking about finding an extra used set to take for back-up, and would have an extra for anybody else at track also...ideas??

edit: are both axles the same?? maybe this was a stupid question....would a replacement axle fit either side??

It depends on whether or not the car has limited slip. IIRC on an open diff in the Cobalt, the passenger side is the drive wheel, so that would be the axel to go. On a car with LSD, it's anybody's guess.

Didn't mean to say it's impossible. It's possible, though significantly less likely, to break a driver's side on a non-LSD car.

maybe somebody can answer a question I have been asking.... are the axles different lengths?? or are they the same on both sides?? Also, where to get a replacement set?/ I saw a member selling used ones for $200 ?? Then I saw someone mention you can get replacements for around $149 ?? They are probably re-conditioned??

all 4 of mine (2 lsd, 2 not) were broken on the driver side, right behind the wheel hub.

fix the darn wheel hop. PM me for the solution this is ridiculous...by the way, drag racing on street tires at 36 +psi is silly it will make hop worse...

Well, I have poly tranny and engine mounts to install, but axles can still break, correct?? What should I lower the pSI to at the track if I run stock tires for now??

I was only trying to figure out what I should be paying for a set of used stock axles, and wanted to know what else I could buy (new) that would work....thanks

poly mounts do diddly for hop. thats my opinion based on my testing. the psi is lowered to change the spring rate in the tire, as it lets the tire sidewall flex more and helps combat hop. There is a reason real drag slicks have "wrinkle walls" doncha know? no pm no more answers I ahve used axles for 50 complete, new (complete but no inner joint) for 100.00

I'm not sure about DSS Stage 2 axles, but as for the stock axles, both sides are the same piece, the passenger side just has a small, removable rubber boot at the end for the intermediate shaft. I've only been through 4 on the driver's side because of a loose mount, so I've used both.
