08-10 SS Turbocharged General Discussion Discuss the 2008 - 2009 Chevy Cobalt SS Turbocharged. On sale since the second quarter of 2008.

I'm curious, is the cobalt ss really THAT bad for reliability?:

I'm pretty new to the forums, and believe me- I'm not trying to start a flame war. I just read the thread about the guy having leaks in this general discussion forum. I noted some of the responses were very strong that the Cobalt is a "POS" etc. So I got curious and went to some other sites for other sport-coupe 4 cylinders. Note I'm only talking about the SS. The SS gets much better overall ratings.

Here are the first 10 non-stickies in the 8thgen civic si site(the SI site). The number 1 sticky is about blown head gaskets-but I didn't copy stickies. I noted all of these have posts within the last 24 hours.

I just used Honda because it is often the 'go to' brand for quality. I love my Cobalt, I haven't had it that long but so far no leaks and no issues. JD Powers rates the vehicle as basically average for reliability. Consumer Reports has the vehicle as average in reliability with a good review for overall driving experience for the SS.

Basically, I was loving my car with no problems- now I feel like I need to be on a deathwatch because of some of the things I've read here. Are y'all having severe problems everyday or do we have a few unlucky people?

I think if you leave it stock it is plenty reliable. If you mod it do your homework and it will still treat you rite.

My Cobalt for the most part is mechanically top notch. I'm just sick of the annoying squeaks, rattles, whistles, and other various noises from the cheap interior. I've had a few mechanical problems with mine but nothing too serious.

Just to clarify- those are Honda owners problems with Honda si's. I just pointed that out because I guess even the Honda has problems (that sound maybe even worse then the problems I hear about SS's).

I had a 06 Civic Si and the biggest problem is a 3rd gear issue. I never had a problem with my civic other then switching gears after track day, I would not be able to get it into gear at all. All cars have their problems, check out the Toyota forums, you will still see issues.

well since i own a 2007 Hodna Civic Si and i am a member on 8thcivic ill chime in on this. 1st the Evap problem thread is for a 2001 oddesy not a civic. The Base Bushings thread is asking where to locate a DIY so he can install them...himself. and the start and stall is an LX AT and the only one of his issues ive heard of.....
Also the steering wheel controls are someone with an aftermarket head unit trying to get their factory sterring wheel controls to functin with that head unit.
The maintence study is just that. a study conparing the maint. that his 2 vehicles need.

I didn't even read the actual content of those posts. Again, I think Honda is the go to brand for quality. I don't think Toyota really makes a car that fits into the category that Si's and SS's fit into. I'm not knocking Si's- just pointing out that all cars have issues and I went there to see if the complaints here were abnormally high because of the way they were written on this forum ("POS" and such).

No issues on my end and I have had mine since June. There have been little quirks here and there but those have been associated with me implementing new things (lights, PAL, etc..). I have posted of these quirks simply because if someone runs across the same issue, they are not necessarily find the answers in the manual.

I think it has to do with a few things. When I say that, I mean every car. If you take care of it and mod it the correct way it should be fine. Some cars were not built as well yes, but if you know how to fix problems and do the right thing the first time around your car should last a long time. I have had only 1 problem with my SS/SC and that was I did not like the clutch. My clutch was fine, but I replaced it anyways and I'm glad I did. Exedy FTW

My best friend and her husband had an 08 Si and they had quite a few problems and ended up getting rid of it. It would never be the same issue, always something different so it didn't apply for lemon law. They ended up just trading it in on a Subaru.

Take your hats off ladies and gents finaly a post worth reading... This is right on.. You can have 20000 happy people and 2 bad apples and all you every hear are the bad remarks. People in this world are so fixated on how they bought a shitty car and they are going to buy something else that has no problems is RIDICULOUS .. We are all driving cars that have moving parts and I have yet to see one performance economy car that doesn't have minor annoyances . They day cars have 0 problems I will roll over in my grave !
