Check engine and apparent fuel related issue
Check engine and apparent fuel related issue
Alright, so i've been driving it for around a month now after being fixed and i've had a persistant check engine light.. it feels like a fuel related issued and since it was hit in the left front i went ahead and replaced the mass air flow sensor with multiple opinions that that was most likely the issue. So it worked for a while and drove fine for a few days before lighting back up. The code said that the ECU was fried.. nice.. so obviously believing the code, i replaced the ECU.. worked fine for a few days.. on the way to South Carolina it came back on and now its back driving very poorly.
Symptoms:
It performs absolutely terribly when the engine hasn't warmed up fully. In mainly first and second gear under both heavy and light acceleration the car will occasionally buck and fall on its nose. It feels as if it chokes itself with fuel. (to a bystander it would look like I was a greenhorn and really bad at driving a manual, as if i had released the clutch too quickly). I think this rather than lack of fuel because the car appears to be running extremely rich. It smells like its burning rich, pops in the exhaust after turning off, black carbon deposits on the rear bumper, and worse fuel economy than when the engine light is off.. but i have no idea what it could be?! Do you guys have any ideas or suggestions for me to investigate?? Oh and for the record, after the car warms up, it progressively does this less and less.
EDIT: Just checked.. Throwing codes
P0101 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance Problem
P0172 System too Rich (Bank 1)
Just as I predicted...

If you have the stock intake check the filter or air box for restrictions,
Is the intake in good shape, not crushed or deformed any where,
Could also be a bad O2 sensor because it is used even in the closed loop cold start. It will most likely be the heating circut of the O2 sensor thats why it gets better when the car warms up.
This is my guess.
And if I were you I wouldnt drive it to much like that or you will be replacing the cat real soon.
They dont like raw gas it will melt the honey comb inside it into a blob abd clog it.

It doesn't have a stock intake, its a cold air and no its not deformed, the filter was crushed in the accident but i replaced it.
I had considered O2 sensors.. how much to replace one?
Hmm your right, but its my only option for now. I cleared the codes yesterday so its running better but the CEL will inevitably come back on.
