PICS: LSJ internal transmission damage

NOT MY SC'd: but the tranny seems to be a weak point in modded SC's as my local GM tech says. He said he has re-built no less than 20 of em and most were not even modded.....and never once had to deal with an LNF tranny so far.

Take a look at this. EEEEEK!

Did he tell you which part that is?

And is it the same weak part every single time?

wow...that's nasty. Good point...I too am wondering if this mechanic sees any one certain part going bad each time.

It is true, I should post some pictures of some LSJ trannies I have worked on. In general I would say axles and transmissions are the weak point in cobalts. Normally the weak points are in the aluminum gears, they end up getting shredded.

Wow that sucks. I don't see GM doing a recall or TSB though..because my guesstimation is that at least 60% of Cobalts are modded. Mine's GM Stage 2, so maybe that would still be covered (but has CAI and catback exhaust...so who knows what they'd cover if it ever went out)

From how I took his explaination of the problem......it didnt seem that it was anywhere specific each time....buth that the tranny in general always shredded teeth.

My diff got lonely and decided to say 'hi' to my clutch one night.

This is a non-G85 trans BTW.

Its a different transmission.

Man it was scary when i put my fingers in a 3" hole that got punched in my differential case and could feel chunks of gears and bearing. When it happened, it sounded like i ran over an enormous stick. Just alot of really loud and scary crunching and banging noises.

Most people that break their trannys are either power shifting or droping the clutch or just cant drive,or making a lot of power wich i dont see.

46,000 miles on the stock non LSD trans and clutch under 'spririted' driving, I'd say I did a little better than most. The non G85 trans big weak point is that non LSD diff. It certainly doesn't like to have all power going to one side, and then shift to the other very quickly.
