Half-broken clutch

Ok, this isn't a problem I am having with my 2.2L LT, but it's a problem my brother is having with his 2.4L G5 GT.

I had to go pick his car up from a party he was at (not in any shape to drive), and I started the car all fine and as normal, but when I went to put the clutch in to shift into reverse there was a loud like snapping sound. So I let the clutch back out and noticed a 2" long piece of metal sitting on the floor matt. I depressed the clutch again and now its loose as hell and if you tap it with your foot when its out it shakes and rattles and moves around WAY too much.

That is the piece. It looks like it was sheared at the long end (cell pic so its fuzzy)

I had called OnStar to tow it to the dealer cause I didn't want to drive it with a possibly screwed clutch and my brother gets a call today saying they didn't see any problem and its driving as it should. So we picked it up a few mins ago and I took it for a drive around the block and it is total ****. Like before it was really stiff and solid and you could easily feel when it catches and now you can't feel ****. Like I was going from a stop and I was riding the clutch cause I had no idea if it had caught or not. I got back in mine right after and it was nice and firm as it should be.

So does anyone here know what the problem is? Or has anyone experienced a similar problem?

Hard to tell from the pic but it looks like half of the clutch pedal return spring......

Would that spring happen to be in the shape of a wishbone by chance?

Edit: Yup that is exactly what it is. I compared my car against his and I noticed it right away. The dealer has to order a whole new clutch pedal assembly though because they don't have the single spring part or whatever so I would assume this is a fairly uncommon thing.

Yep its the return spring. Mine went in april. You have to replace the whole dam clutch pedal, and when i ordered it it was on back order. So good luck. I just got the part last week and haven't had time to put it in but other then a softer pedal it drives ok.
