custom exhaust (lemans style)

I have a buddy who owns an exhaust shop , he does lots of custom work for evo's and sti's etc. we were bs'ing the other nite and he mentioned how sick it would be to put a lemans style side pipe on my car and asked if I would let him do it . I was just wondering what you guys thought . the sizes we were discusing were 2.5in pipe from the header into a magnaflow cat then flaring out into a 3in stainless tip right in front of the back tire on the drivers side .

ehhhh...i'd be kinda iffy on that. remember lemans cars are pushing a lot more exhaust through and make it sound sick. Idk how it would really sound on a 4-banger like ours. plus, you will probably lose performance because of the extreme lack of back pressure...rule of trhumb: excessive exhaust flow != performance

well option two was to go with a magnaflow cat and then a magnaflow tubular muffler after the cat to create more back pressure , backpressure was an issue I mentioned to him right away . he seems to think it will be ok and I trust him he has made some pretty sick exhaust set ups on alot of 4 bangers

Go with a 2.5... with a 3in. set-up you loose backpressure and power.

it would be 2.5 to the muffler and about a foot of 3in so it wouldn't really make a diff.

That would be kick ass. I would get a resinator or something in there to make it sound a bit nicer tho. Probably will take some experimenting.

If you are worried with back pressure, why not go 2.25" with a Borla muffler. That would help compensate for the lack of distance.

what is the difference between the stock exhaust and the after market 2.5s? is it just the muffler and resinator?
