best budget 2.4 boost..? Saab 9-3 turbo kit..?
Hey guys,
So, I just bought out my lease, so I've got the 2.4 for another 4 1/2 years. Thus, the project continues. Was considering boost again.. I'm more a fan of turbos, but to my knowledge, going s/c is cheaper for these cars.. True? My friend has a turbo B18 CRX and my other friend has a turbo GSR, so I have help with boost, but I'm just curious about the Cobalt specifics. I don't want some boost monster with like 50 pounds of pressure, but rather something similar to how the stock Saab 93 2.0T runs. Good all around, but it really ***** when you punch it. Thus, it got me thinking about basically running a turbo set up from a Saab 93. Doable? Or too much money for not as much gain as aftermarket? Or is the trusty M62 still the best way to get cheap-ish boost? What kinda price ranges am I looking at to go M62 vs stock 93 vs aftermarket turbo?
Thanks!!
Anyone..?? Bumpppp.. I know my 2.4 homies gotta know what's up..

Do-able, the only thing you really have to worry about is the piping, the turbo should fit. However, total waste of money. Reason being, the stock turbo shell on the saab can crack if you push over 6 psi. and if ur gonna go F/I and not go to atleast 8-10, then its a waste of money that could have gone to something else.
The supercharger is a cheaper route to take, however, if your going to spend a couple grand, you might as well go turbo due to the fact that you will receive more of a "Oh wow" sensation when you take off WOT. Also to add, it is still a hassle and more expensive in the long run. Why? After 25 000 KM your gonna new a new blower lol and that'll run you quite a bit.
Advantage --> puts lesser stress on the engine as opposed to a turbo charger
The turbo charger is my favorite route, but it is your preference in the long run. Reason for preferring a turbocharger is more power output in the longer run. Turbo shell lasts longer if taken care of, and if the turbo shell does crack, you can pick one up off ebay for 3-4 hundred bucks as opposed to 700-1200 for a supercharger.

opinions and criticism are more than welcome if I am wrong or missing something.

You can probably pick up a 9-3 turbo and manifold for less that 500$ but your going to need to go custom with the charge piping, IC placement, and down pipe. Keep that in mind custom is expensive. I'd guess that 1500 could get you a whole SAAB turbo setup if you did the work yourself.
You I would say it's a better bet than the SC. It would spool near instantly and provide a considerable gain in power.

So in other words, a Saab turbo set-up would be in the same ballpark as an M62 supercharger swap in terms of price? I heard that the M62 full set-up runs from 1,000 to 1,500 based on parts, generally.
I'm not worried about placement and custom parts. My friend runs his own shop, he has the turbo B18 CRX and customizes everything. I'm mainly worried about the electronics and drivability.
Would piecing together the Saab turbo kit be similar to any other turbo build, but you'd just get the Saab turbo and manifold instead? On the same note, could you even use a larger turbo if you wanted to with said manifold?
Similarly to an M62 on a 2.4, would it probably put you around the 250hp range without any major mods? I already have a catback, will have a header/dp again, and I'll definitely be running another intake with that set up like with my current n/a set up.
So would I just get the car tuned with HPT like normally and just try different settings?
So, here's an eBay listing for a 9-3 2.0T manifold. Under 50 bucks. Is this what I'd need? Will the 2.0 one work for my 2.4? Saab doesn't make a 2.4 I don't believe. Only a 2.0 and a 2.3.
