Should I buy a Cobalt SS?

I am considering a few cars; the 3.5se altima, the wrx, and the jetta, but the altima is the only car im really considering against the Cobalt. I am just curious what you guys have to say, what makes the Cobalt SS a better car than the Altima? Also, how does it stack up against the other small performance jap cars? How inexpensive are aftermarket mods?

I am a big performance junkie, what are the most common upgrades, how easy are they to install, and how much does it cost?

We can't tell you waht to buy and you'll probably get a lot of biased answers here. We can't mind read your personal preferences for a car, so go out and test drive them and see. I love my SS/SC and it's the only car I was considering buying. It's a great car, mine's been very reliable with only a few minor issues. I'd definitely buy one again. Aftermarket mods seem to do well on the car. I have an intake and that's probably about all I'll have...possibly a pulley as well. I'm more into getting a good race suspension in mine than making it go faster.

Never driven the Altima. Couldn't honestly say. If you like the sportier look, the altima can't match the SS/SC. Not sure about the performance though.

mods for a cobalt are very easy, and dont take much experience. mods are still being experimented on, so thats a lack in aftermarket... the wrx is a good car... you can get a 2006 TR for a lil more than a fully loaded cobalt ss/sc the aftermarket it huge for subaru.. and fun i just got a cobb stg2 for my sti... its fast and sounds awsome.

The Altima is larger than the Cobalt and is positioned more upscale as well. I don't think too many people cross shop the two.

I am going for that style of car, small, powerfull, and sporty. The reason the altima has caught my eye is that it has 250 hp, comes in a stick, and is relatively loaded for nearly the same price. I am just curious about why you would pick the cobalt over is competitors?

Where are you pricing the Altima? I'm getting about a $4000 difference between the 3.5SE and Cobalt SS/SC in msrp.

You can buy a Stage 3 Supercharger Upgrade for Under $600 good for 260 hp. Buy some exhaust for $450.

You'll destroy the Altima and have quite a bit of cash left over.

I love the Cobalt SS S/C and I have had ZERO problems with it (I have a 2005, 2nd one in GA, so I've had it for as long as it has been out).

The Cobalt SS is a much sportier car than the Altima. You can smoke a Civic, keep up with BMW's, beat stock Mustangs, I mean it's great fun.

The interior is incredible for an economy car...especially if you get the color-keyed seats. The Pioneer sound system sounds great. Great car...

TEH WRX can NEVAR LOSE!!!!!11!!1ONE!!11!1!!!

Okay seriously only buy the Jetta if you hike. Kidding. The Altima will be crazily quick, though not quite on par with the SS. Bang for the buck on mods right now I would say is the WRX, but god damn those cars look FUGLY. Though I hate to say it because I hated j-bodies which were replaced by, you guessed it, the Delta platform, the SS/SC is the way to go.

You're considering the Altima and the SS/SC in the same breath? They are two different beasts! Ok, the Altima has a V6 with gobs of horsepower, but at the end of the day it's still basically a family sedan. The SS/SC is designed to compete in the sport compact world, and I'd bet my hat that it blows away the Altima in the twisties. I know nothing about the Altima aftermarket, but I'd bet that it's not as easy to make additional power with its engine as it is to make extra power with the SS/SC. This is as unbiased as I can make it: if you want a practical, powerful sedan, go with the Altima. If you want a sporty compact coupe with gutsy power and nimble handling, go with the Cobalt. I really do see the two as not exactly in the same playing field.

Eh, The Altima is not really a car to be compared with the cobalt. It's a bigger car in a different segment. The 2007 Sentra is going upscale. And would be easier to compare.

i have driven the new SE-R altima and had some ***** and the nice 350Z exhaust note, its just too big, i wanted something smaller and sportier.

If i could do over again i would prob be in a new WRX a skittle or a used STi...turbo is the way to go, sorry. but its true if your looking for power

I have heard locally of a guy who test drove a Cobalt SS and it broke. yeah it f'in broke LOL, it shut off and would not turn back on, had to be towed

yea altima is in a boat league of its own, its a fairly large, hefty car. for closer comparision i would probably say a spec-v vs a cobalt ss and id probably choose the spec-v just cause nissans are manufactuered in mexico and my buddies own a couple of new ones and have had INSANE problems

LOUDOG,

Drive the Cobalt 2.4 before you decide. I drove both the SC & 2.4, and bought the 2.4 SS. Personally I would have no use for an altima. I see altima as a family car. I love the size of the Cobalt. I've heard of such poor quality on the Sentras, that I would probably never by a Nissan. The Z car is attractive, but they have had engine/powertrain problems as well. That said, the Cobalt will probably depreciate faster than the altima. The 2.4 SS will not depreciate as baddly as the SS SC will.

If you get an Altima, get the SE-R; it's a nice ride.
