Damn Strut bolts

Putting my progress springs on last night. Snap goes 2 of the 3 right strut bolts. WTF I threaded 2 bolts in to make it drivable and its at the dealer getting alligned and getting those fixed. $99.99 for an alignment and I'm sure those bolts arent cheap. And also the sway bar stabilizer on the left side is bent. Crappy GM metals. Anyways hopefully they can fix that and I don't need to have them order one in. I'm just waiting for the bill. But I do love the look of the springs on it. It looks quite awesome.

Why did they snap? Did you cross thread them or something?

I assume you are talking about the 3 strut tower attach bolts. Ya, um how did you break those? To replace that you have to replace the whole top bearing plate. Its not that expensive I'm sure, but you do have the take the strut off to replace it, so you are looking at labor charges. And how the hell did you bend your stabilzer bar? Sounds a lot to me like you hit something.

Halfcent-I don't know how it bent. And yes it is the strut tower bolts. I was torqueing them and didn't even get down to 15lbs and snap.

Just got off the phone with the service guy 381$ for the strut plate and sway bar piece. With labor and taxes.

Those nuts aren't very tight from the factory. Probably only 15 lbs. if that.

Did you install the new springs yourself? If so, just dissassemble the strut assembly a second time and throw a new strut mount on there. Of course, you'll still be needing an alignment....

I gotta agree with half-cent, unless your tq sensing abilities are way off or you got one hell of a faulty part, I really don't see any way to cause that kind of damage just from minorly tightening a few bolts...

99 dollars for just a front wheel alignment's pretty steep... dam stealership. Hell your regular tire and repair shop like big O or something will usually do a 4-wheel for around 60.

I took it to the dealership because it needed the parts too. I had my torquie wrench set to 15lbs and the bolts snapped before I even got to the torque setting. I belive a bunch of people broke them putting the strut bars on. The part was 76.??$ and the sway bar link was 75.??$ and labor was 99$ and hour for 2 f-cking hours!!!!!!

I believe him when he says the strut bolts are garbage. I too used a torque wrench and set it to the firmness stated in the instructions with my DC Strut bar. They broke 10lbs into torquing.

I ended up tapping some custom bolts to fix my issue. Also, the bracket on the supercharger that holds the coolant lines up keeps breaking. this is the second time mine has broken in a year. The metal is very cheap and flimsy. GM doesn't use very good parts. If they cannot make a good bracket or decent strut bolts then they have serious issues on there hands

I snapped mine at 20lbs, (my fault for going that far) but I just ordered a new strut tower top. Cost $76.XX not to bad I guess. I just installed it myself no problem.

I used my arm and I've put on my strut bar twice, put it to about as tight as i could comfortably get with my arm and a 1/2" ratchet. Didn't break mine.

Wow, I just put the SS/SC spring on mine a couple of weeks ago and did not have any troubles at all, and I break bolts all the time!! My dealer only charged 69.95 for an alignment to and I got that on Tuesday. So that 99.95 may be too much.
