Dealer trading cars

question:

will a dealer charge extra to sell you a car that they dont have?

an example: Dealer says "so what one are you looking for, we can get it for you!"

i heard they just trade the car you want for one they have and there are no extra costs....is this true (no extra costs, even hidden ones?)

The best example I can give you is.

2006 C6 Z06 @ chev in Ontario - MSRP $100,060 CAN gets bought by an edmonton dealer.
Same Z06 sold to a guy in Edmonton MSRP $120,060 CAN

IF the dealers want mutual cars each other have, than there shouldnt be any extra cost, but if theres a diff in price you will somehow pay extra.

The Z06 is fact I watch it get loaded on to the truck and talked to the VP of the dealership about where it was going and asked him about the price.

But trading, like I said there shouldnt be extra cost to you if your dealer wants a car another dealer has and that dealer wants a car your dealer has. Should be a straight up trade if the cars are the same. Heard of this a few times in 05 when dealers were swapping diff SS S/C's to satisfy customers

I guess it would depend on how far the trade is. The G5 I wanted was an hour and a half away at another dealership. I paid nothing extra. The dealer sent a car down for trade and came back with mine.

My brother is a sales manager for our local chevy dealership and he does dealer trades on a daily basis. The only cost to the dealership is paying somebody to take one vehicle to the other dealership and pick up the vehicle for his customer. The cost of the payed person is absorbed by the dealership.

Usually the other dealership asks for a need vehicle that sells well at that particular dealership.

My 06 SS/SC was dealer traded for as well as my fiance's 06 HHR Spring Edition, so the dealership absorbed 2 dealer trades.

Hope that helps

My dealer would have done a swap if they had an '05 SS/SC on the lot. They got ONE '05 in Laser Blue but it was sold :-(. Dude crashed it and wrote it off 2 weeks later. I had to go to Calgary to get one.

my dealer did a trade for me.
there was a silver one at a dealer 500kms away, and they swapped it for there black one they had here.
identicle cars, just the color separating them.
no price changed at all, we were figuring out the numbers on the black one, when all the wheeling and dealing was done, i told him i wanted the silver and he said that it wouldnt be a problem.
2 days later, the truck pulled in with my silver one on the back of it.
no price change at all

to the above posters....

yes it helps a lot...thanks it sort of settles me looking around for the perfect one when i dont have to if there isn't an extra cost to me.

do you suggest telling them straight out that you dont want the one they have and telling them what you want...or is it better to go in pretending you want the one they have then leaving because they dont have what you want. this inturn will make the salesman offer to find the one you want.

be straight up with them and if they want your business, they will find you what you want. there are many dealerships out there for them to trade with. my brother has 10-15 dealerships he trades with daily.

you know what the invoice is for the car you want, just let them know that you know what the invoice for the vehicle you want with the options you want.
