Anyone notice the fancy ignition?

Get in your car, and just turn the key to the start position real quick and let go.

In a normal car the starter would go for a brief second, but probably not start the car. The cobalt is smart enough to keep the starter going until she fires up.

SWEET!

Thats really cool, definitely a nice unexpected feature.

It should help prevent damage to the starter motor/flywheel from people cranking the engine too long after it is already started. That saves wear and tear on the starter as well as preventing the flywheel from losing teeth

yep this is a feature currently installed on many GM platforms, it only requires the key to be turn to the START position for the slighest moment to engage the starter and the car will crank for up to 5 seconds to start the car.....this is because the starter is now pcm controlled, not ignition switch controlled as in older vehicles....it increases starter, battery, flywheel, and ignition switch life.....it also makes it so you cant inadvertantly try to start the car with it already running and damage anything...this feature debuted on the 2002 Trailblazer/Envoy with the straight 6 because in preproduction vehicles executives were damaging starters and flywheel ring gears because they would try to start it while it was running because the engine was so smooth and quiet.

Yup, ECM controlled starter. Also makes it VERY easy to enable a remote start feature (lots of GM products have this - Malibu, LaCrosse, etc.). Unfortunately GM doesn;t seem to be willing to put remote start on a manual trans vehicle, so we don't get it on the SS.
