these cars look identical as in mechanical. the engines both 2.4. i'm surprised scion would put such a large 4 cylinder in their car. quick question though, anyone know the compression ratio of the ss 2.4? and... you guys think the 2 would run even?
give me your opinion.
any input on these 2 cars would be great.
thanks

10.6 to 1 for the 2.4L SS engine... I'd guess the SS would edge it out since they weigh within 100 lbs of each other and its' got a bit more hp and tq as long the gearing isn't crap.

10.6? wow i was expecting somewhere around 10.2 or less. so this engine will deffinitly run on regular?
also, which engine is gunna sound better? the scion or chevy?
thanks

i would go tc, so much stuff out for it its rediculous. awsome car too. interior is nice, imo better than the cobalt. just my opinion. but intior wouldnt stop me in getting the ss s/c. lol

hmmm, now i'm actually considering an import now. no offense, my familly is just a chevy family and we never had anything else. kind of a tradition.
what about the mazda 3 guys?
thanks

i'd take th e mazda 3 over both, minus the ss s/c. handling is awsome on that car, very quiet and refined, interior quality, imo mazda has the nicest aside from european cars. but between honda, nissan, mazda. mazda has the nicest. its as good imo as toyota.

Scion TC is an ugly bloated car. Weighs more the the SS and it runs a 15.9

The SS will smoke it and it looks great

I think the 2.4L SS has more than 174hp.....The SVT Focus has a 2.0L with 10.2:1 compression and 170hp..So if the 2.4 has 10.6, I'm guessing it has more hp than what's advertised.

the svt has variable valve timing (zetec)
but yes based on the actual power output of the SS/SC, i would say the 2.4 has maybe 180@the wheels if not closer to 195

A tuned 2.4 would be sweet esp. if they have all the SS/SC upgrades in the block(oil cooler, piston oil jet, sodium filled valves, etc.) if supercharged would be close to 300 out of the box

nah i dont think chevy would even consider all that.

but yeah i think i'm definitly going to get the cobalt ss 2.4. sounds sweet.
i'm gunna keep it mostly stock maybe an intake, ignition and muffler tip (i hate the loud ass cars, they give me head achs) I dont think putting a exhaust sytem on 4 bangers is worth it, unless u want ur car to sound like an airplane. its going to be the nicest car ever, just nice and clean.
thanks for the tc input, i feel more confident with chevy now!

JapEtr...only the svt focus had VVT....ZETEC does not mean it has VVT. It's just simply the name of the engine ( i should know. I just traded in my '03 svt focus a week ago for SS, and I know EVERYTHING about the svt focus).

the ss 2.4 will most likely only have 173hp maybe 175hp thats it not at the wheels. they wont make it like the ss s/c and give it close numbers.. as far as the 2.0L focus svt having 170hp it does, but no tq. where as the 2.4 eco has equal tq thanks to 2.4L. the extra .4 L makes a difference.

thats because its made on the same platform as the new volvo s40, which is the same platform that the new focus (current in europe) will be built on

I havnt driven the 3, but if its anything like the s40, then it should be amazing

EDDIE..the svt focus has 145 lbs of torque..that's not bad for a 2.0L N/A..and 80% of that torque comes at 2200rpm..so 116 lbs of tq @2200 rpm ain't bad.

both are nice, but the tc has sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many options, and parts to put in it that you should go with the tc. And it also has a very distinct look, if you like that then i would go with the tc.

Whats up with the complaints floating around many boards on the net that the TC has some problems with unexpectedly loosing traction in corners when wet?

Actually I heard something about that too. Not sure what the issue is, but I can imagine that its either something to do with the suspension tuning or the type of tires the car uses.

Anyone have any info on this??

Actually, as a current ZX2 owner and possible future Cobalt owner, I can tell you that the above quote is sort of half right.

Your standard Zetc with VVT is used on the exhaust cam for emissions control in place of an EGR system. At wide open throttle the VVT is disabled for max performance. The SVT focus uses VVT on the intake cam to increase performance as most people expect VVT to do.

2 completely different approaches to VVT technology.

Did you buy one yet?
My girlfriend just got a TC and she loves it. It has a very refined interior and rides and handles well. Not to mention it has a camry engine in it so should result in better resale and reliability. If your interested in upgrading for performance in the future, TRD has a supercharger kit that is covered under the factory warranty that should be well over 200whp and if you need even more power there are already turbo kits available for 400whp. Now if I can just talk my gf into that. :-D

TC weighs 3000lbs, has a laughable 6200 rpm redline. Plus the Coblat owns it for looks.

TC weighs about 75lbs more than the cobalt so that's negligible. TC's have more torque down low in the rpm range which really pulls it off the line. It would be interesting to see a race between these two. If you don't like the looks then that's one thing, but my girlfriend only paid $17,600 and when we looked at a 2006 Cobalt SS which we did briefly, loaded similarly it stickered for like $20,500 which I'm sure they would've negotiated back on, but I doubt they would've went $3,000 back plus the TC had Ipod connectivity and control built in which was a big plus for us. In the end she liked the looks better on the TC, ride was smoother due to the longer wheelbase, sunroof was larger plus rear passengers have one, optional supercharger covered by warranty, toyota vs. chevy resale value and reliability, and then bunch of neat little features like tire pressure monitoring, ipod connectivity, and the interior is really nice looking and not cheap feeling at all which I will say I liked about the cobalt as well. I think if your looking at the cobalt ss coupe you definitely need to at least consider the TC and go drive one.

Whats the TC's low down tq? The Cobalt is already pulling 151lb-ft at 2200rpm.

no Scions in Canada. Although I have seen an XB around...... :o
I agree the price is very good---but who knows what that would translate into here in Canada. Could easily be more $$$

My car (2.4 SS) weighs 2840 with around 1/4 tank. It has awesome low end for 4cly. Of course the gearing plays a big ahnd in that.

TRD does have some cool stuff no doubt.

I just think a 4 cly needs a much higher redline.

I applaud Toyota for bringing a small inexspesive coupe to market...but I really dislike Toyotas. Its the bland styling they all seem to have. Its kind of a boring company. Where thes flagship sports car??? Oh the Supra WAS good but has been dead for a long time. Okay thats my rant.

Not that I am anti-import---I like Mazda

as a former Ford Contour owner :-D I'm gonna have to correct you on that. On a standard Zetec you have VCT (variable cam timing) not VVT and yes it is for emissions control and a pain in the ass for those unlucky standard zetecs that have been stuck with it.

Only the SVT Zetec has VVT...

This is my personal opinion, so I dont wanna make anyone take this offensively, but i think the Scion TC's are just an ugly, flat fronted Celica knock-off
