Has anyone considered a rear disc brake coversion for the non SS cars? I have been kicking the idea around and have asked a couple people at the dealer and I see no reason why this can't be done. Any suggestions or comment would be nice. Thanks in advance.

It's doable but expensive. Unless you're using your car for autocross I'm not sure it would be worth it.

i am really looking into doing this as well it will look 10x better and help stopping distance as well so it would be worthwhile to do

wow, thats such an expensive upgrade. the non SS cars arent even worth that kind of work. If i were you, spend that kind of money and get a turbo kit or something, the brakes are good enough.

90% of the stopping force comes from the front brakes. I don't think it's worth the hassle.

Agreed.. Rear brakes don't do much.

After doing some research it doesn't look like it is going to be that easy. I was planning on just getting a set of rears off of the SS but the bolt pattern on the SS is 5x100 and the LS coupe is 4x100 so unless i can get a 4 bolt rotor that is the same size i will have to wait for an aftermarket kit. that conversion looks like its only for an ss since its a 5 bolt pattern, we need it for the ls in the back

SSBC has already made a rear disc conversion for the cobalt LS. GM sent us a car that they wanted rear disc brakes on. The kit for the LS is already done......front and rear disc, while the kit for the SS is pretty much all done as well. When the SS kit goes on sale i can let you guys know, as for the LS kit I would call to find out about it...check out www.ssbrakes.com for the phone number.

I am interested in doing this as well and actually did a search. I see the kits on the vendors sites but it always just looks like rotors and calipers. I want to know in detail what is involved with a conversion kit. Also would you be able to swap a rear setup off of a cavi or possible a G5. Not sure what the brake options are on it.

It's like "resurrection of the dead threads" week here. Anyway, the kits come with mounting brackets that convert your mounts to hold a caliper instead of a drum. It's basically a simple bolt on. The only messy part is the brake line bleed.

I assumed that the kits would include everything. I just want something to show me what to do like a how to or an example from another car so that I know what I would be getting myself into and also look into other options for parts that may be cheaper like getting parts from a cavi or something.

The kit comes with instructions, and pics of the install as you go. I highly doubt that anything from a cavi would work on the cobalt. Also if you have problems there is a tech line that can assist you. Im sure, as long as you have basic knowledge, that the install would be fairly straight forward and take maybe a day, at most. The kit number is A163-7 and the front is A163-6. You can also get those powdercoated too......

Actually, drum brakes have much better stopping power than Disc. The only advantage of disc to drum (aside from looks) is they cool faster, and like somebody said, unless you're going to be doing some serious autocrossing, its not worth it. The reason GM puts the drum on the base cars is because, the only way you can get equivilant stopping power to the drums is with larger discs an calipers, and since the base only have 15" wheels, larger discs and calipers will not fit.

If you want better stopping power for the street I'd just pick up the GMPP Rotors and some decent pads for the front and you'll be set.

well i have upgraded to 17" wheels and would like to upgrade but the cost for the kit seems a bit pricey. I thats why I am wondering about other options. However if i did the conversion i wouldnt be able to use my 15's for winter tires

I thought of that too but if i was gonna spend that kind of money i would just upgrade the front ones.

Im sure if you shop around on the vendors on the forum here you could work out SOME kind of deal to get it a bit cheaper. Or just call the company directly, they will probably try to sell it to you at retail, but who knows. PM me for some info.
