I recently went in for a free oil change on my SS cobalt and a service tech asked me if i had dyno'ed mine yet. I replied no and he then went on to tell me that I should because he has seen them dyno showing 240hp and that the 205 hp listing was for inssureance reasons. Has anyone dyno'ed and can support this claim or is the tech just full of it?

 

Search the site, you'll find a lot of numbers. 240hp is unrealistic though. Typical numbers are 210-215.

 

240 wow i think that’s a bit off. I got mine around 225 and a few others also got it into the 220's (stock obviously) like MarcS said most get it in the 210 region

 

If your getting 220-225 at the wheels, than you have around 240 at the flywheel.
You lose some power through the driveline.

the loss in horse power is largely to to the loss in the drive train, but the amount of loss is mainly dictated the the amount of Torque the engine produces. so the more torque the engine produces to lower the loss through the drivetrain will be. but the general idea is correct the whp will be lower the the crank hp.

 

I would agree that 240-250 flywheel is a good estimate for the SS/SC. You gotta realize dyno corrections can be a tad hinky which is why you see some abnormally high.

 

there was a show on speedvision and they were haveing a competition with a ss, a VW and skyline ( don't ask me why they included the skyline) but the point of the comp was to tear down and trick out the car. the cobalt team consisted of a couple of guys from GM racing. getting to the point they Dynoed the ss and it only put down 199 at the wheels straight from the factory. So I wonder where all these 220 numbers are coming from. I have to imagine that these professionals would have the best equipment. and they would know what they were doing.

 

This has been discussed, chances are there cobalt was not broken in and therefore was not putting out full boost. They also used a spindle dyno which can differ from wheel dynos.

 

There are many factors. You can go to 10 different dynos in the same city and et 10 different numbers. As I've mentioned several times, SAE corrected numbers also tend to slightly skew things particularly with FI cars.

A dyno is a tuning tool.
