View Full Version : 1/4 mile times @ GM Small Car Bash
zinner 07-08-2005, 05:12 PM 14.958 @ 94.81 MPH
Not bad for my first time at the track. I made 7 runs in total as as the day when on and the track and my car got hotter my times slipped into the low 15s but my trap speed stayed about 90-96 mph. I didn't get a lot of wheel hop, but I was spinning the wheels pretty bad through first gear. I would like to think I could have done a lot better with a better R/T and better throttle control in 1st gear.
I talked to another SS/SC owner who did 14.7 which seems pretty doable, but his times slipped as the track heated up as well.

MarcS 07-08-2005, 10:52 PM Nine job man :)
avro206 07-08-2005, 11:17 PM nice et but keep working at it. Should quicken up after it breaks in
what gear are you in at the end?
redrocket 07-08-2005, 11:24 PM How'd you do at launching the car? Your 60' is about the same as I run and believe I could do better. I either break lose or nose dive the car
I'm havin a hell of a time with this! I have yet to do better than 15.01@99.7, but I keep trying :)

Launching is pretty tough, I just hold the rpm's 2-3k and drop the clutch and floor it. The tires are spinning pretty bad through first gear but hook up in 2nd nicely. 6 of my 7 runs where 15.0-3. It was getting pretty hot out and the heat slows you down a bit, the more runs I made, the slower and slower my runs got
Since it was my first time at the 1/4 track (every), I was very happy to get into the 14's at all.
Eddie 07-10-2005, 06:43 AM u should let an owner w/ a boosted cav drive it, or boosted eco, one that is a good driver, ie low 14's or better, maybe they can pull some excellent mid or even low 14's which i think is doable w/o the lsd.

Not a bad slip for a first time. 2.3 60' can definately be improved upon, but it's probably average or better. Anyway, what was the weather like, and is your car "broken in" and up to full boost, yet?
redd214 07-12-2005, 12:26 AM are these cars that hard to launch?!?!
all im seeing from redlines and ss's are high 14 second time slips. no offense to any of u but n/a eco power cavs are running high 14's with only bolt ons.
i not trying to offend any of u i just wanna know whats going on so dont take it the wrong way.

I'm thinking its a result of at least 3 things:
1. SS hasn't been out long, so not many have been to the track
2. ...and even fewer have gotten much practice w/ the car
3. Also, because the car is relatively new, not THAT many are even broken in and boosting to what they should be.
I'm sure the SS will see some better times once these three issues are resolved, which will just take time. I'm sure this will be the case because I'm sure that the bolt-on high 14-second J-body's aren't trapping anywhere near as high as the SS, as most are 95+ and some have even cracked the 100-mph marker IIRC.
zinner 07-12-2005, 01:20 AM My car had about 6500 miles on it. I had a lot of wheel spin in 1st gear. I guess I am up to full boost right now. I could shift better I am sure and definetly launch better. There was one SS/SC owner than did 14.7. I just need more practice.
redd214 07-12-2005, 02:57 AM rite on, i understand fellas. thanx
BullDog71ss 07-12-2005, 11:40 AM Yeah, the car is very hard to launch without the LSD. Infact, you shouldnt launch it at all. Let it sit at idle...amber, amber, go, green...then just gas and feather a bit. That will help out with your R/T as well. Gotta anticipate the green and hit it a bit early. But overall that pretty impressive for your first outing in a difficult car to drive.
I'd like to know if anyone is having the problem i'm experiencing while shifting hard from 1st to 2nd...sometimes the clutch just gives and does not catch the flywheel what so ever. Just a bunch of spin followed by my rev limiter kicking in. This is getting old fast. The car only has 1200 miles but the clutch should be broken in nicely by now. This has been my biggest difficulty while trying to launch the car.
Yeah, the car is very hard to launch without the LSD.
The LSD is going to help on road racing, not so much drag racing.
Zinner - good times. Get that 60' down and you'll be in 14.5 territory no prob. :-D
Wolfman 07-15-2005, 03:29 PM That slip is very nice.
zinner 07-15-2005, 09:10 PM I don't think an LSD would have helped much since both wheels were spinning anyhow.
Probably better throttle control in 1st gear would of helped more. I am itching to get back out there, I just need to find a local track that lets you run on a day other than friday :(
airtonics 07-16-2005, 02:45 PM Zinner was it you I raced in this vid?

My best that day was a 15.0 @ 93 2.35 60 ft First time I had mine on the track as well and I had just installed the S/C for the bash... Very rough tune. I was hitting 7-8 psi during those runs.
This vid just goes to show how badly we could use slicks.... I got raped off the line:
