2.4 crank = forged ??
yes, just the rods... as far as i understand it, the LSJ has forged rods and pistons, the LE5 has forged rods and hardened cast pistons, and the L61 has cast rods and pistons. all of them have a cast crank...

The ljs has a forged crank. The le5 does not.
Both ljs and le5 have cast pistons.
Both ljs and le5 have forged rods.
Manufacturers like to go with cast pistons because (other than that they are cheaper) they expand less when heated, being a less dense material. Thus a tighter piston to cylinder wall clearance can be maintained, causing them to rattle less when cold (less knocking or piston slap). This was a problem on the le5 even with the cast pistons - because of the longer stroke causing a greater wrist pin angle. If you install forged pistons be forewarned that your engine may rattle like a desiel when cold. GM redesigned the le5 piston skirts for 2007 to reduce the cold knock complaint.
GM went with forged rods for both engines having learned that the l61's cast rods were the weakest part of the engine.

hehe, good post! I didnt know that. Now the weakest part of the engine is the drivetrain.... ie: shitty tranny and clutch.... i hate mine. do all 2.4L's have shity trannys? my shifter is hard to move as well, like its gritty. i tried it on my friends SS/SC and it shifts like its in astroglide...
