Powder Coated Valve Cover Install
Powder Coated Valve Cover Install
I just finished installing a Modern Performance Powder-Coated Valve Cover and Chrome Oil Cap. I wanted a little more color rather than more polish.
The install was fairly simple. 14 bolts, one ground wire/bracket next to the coil pack assembly, the coil pack assembly, one wire loom holder, and of course the engine cover. The New VC didn't come with gaskets -- order a GM PN# 12584084 seal kit and pick up some Permatex High Tack from your local parts house. The brush that comes with the High Tach is too big -- use a 3/8" (or smaller) size brush (for plastic models) to get the High Tach neatly into the VC seal grooves. You have to reuse the 14 bolts/rubber assemblies -- takes a little muscle to remove from old VC and install in new VC -- a couple drops of a soap-water solution makes it much easier.

I've noticed several owners are using small filters in the sides of their VCs rather than reattaching the tube to the Air Intake. While this isn't going to be a problem they should reconsider connecting this tube because this engine doesn't have a PCV type system that older cars had. Take a look at the cylinder head -- there are three rectangular passageways on the forward-car edge, and two rectangular passageways on the aft-car edge, of the cylinder head. These passageways direct the crankcase blow-by gases up into the steel baffle in the VC -- the intake sucks these gases out. It is a fuel-rich mixture that your engine uses/reburns. If you just have a filter then your engine can't reburn this gas -- it's a small deal but every bit of fuel mileage helps...

Thanks! I forgot to mention -- I found that Krylon Engine Paint #2114 (Buick Red) is a good match. It is a little darker but will match up under the hood to the victory red paint on the Cobalt. The Exhaust High heat engine red some are using doesn't have a high gloss.
