Oil Changed - BUT WTF

When I took of the oil plug to drain my oil I noticed that there was no copper, or no type of seal other then the plug itself. Every car I changed oil in before had some type of oil plug seal around it. It also seemed as if the pan was damp with oil on the outside underneath the car. Almost as if a small oil leak. Maybe right from the dealer they did not have the plug tight enough but either way I did not like both those things. Other then that it was very simple to change the oil. I will make sure I disconnect the one sensor wire before using the 1 1/4 socket for the oil filter. Have to becareful not to damage it. The one thread on here helped me alot with the pics. Anyway, does anyone know if the oil plug should have some type of seal/gasket? Maybe mine is missing along with other things the car was missing from the dealer. Thanks...

I seem to recall there being a copper o-ring on the drain plug. IIRC you're 'supposed' to replace that everytime you pull out the drain plug. I've never bothered to do it.

No you don't have to switch it. If you see it start to leak then you should. I work at a dealership and have done my fair share of oil changes, and the only ones I've seen leak are the damaged ones from the people before me who have done the oil change, the ones that are torn and they still put them back on.

the seal is built right in to the bolt, you can go many oil changes before needing to replace it, chanes are the bolt will need to be replaced before that seal does, also that dampness on the outside of the oil pan is called "oil pan sweat" caused both by condensation and small amounts of oil getting out, best way to stp this is to use an engine stop leak additive.

Yes, because additives are always a good thing for boosted cars......

I've changed the oil on so many different cars, I probably just got confused on what goes with what car. I've only done it twice on my SS so obviously it's a little hard to recall a small detail like that.

Correct, I just changed my oil tonight and that's how mine was. It's a black o-ring.

If you'd rather spend $10 on a problem that can be fixed for $5 be my guest. Get the proper plug with the seal and go on with your life for another change, if the problem persists then tell the dealership of the problem and that you DEMAND that your new car be fixed so this problem does not cause engine failure later down the road. Because if that does not stop it it's not the drain plug that's leaking.

But form what it sounds like is happening is it's seeping past the lack of the rubber seal. Spray some degreaser after you've got everything done up a few times to clean it up then check it around half way till your next change. In the mean time watch your oil level with every fillup of gas.
