View Full Version : Tomorrow starts my build!
06noscobaltss 11-20-2006, 12:42 AM Well tomorrow starts my build. Everything that is going into it is...
Diamond forged pistons, Crower Rods, Cometic Head Gasket, ARP head studs, Darton Sleeves, Neutral Balance Shafts, JBP Stage 2 Tri-Flow Cams, JBP Stage 2+1 Race Head!
Most parts wont be in for like 2-3 days but the head will take the longest timing in at 8-10 days to make sure its treated right! but I will have the motor out of the car tomorrow night and then the tear down begins!
silverSS 11-20-2006, 12:45 AM better get bwarddd's phone number lol
good luck with the build
Good luck. Who's doing the work?
alleycat58 11-20-2006, 01:36 AM No valve springs? That was one thing I got the impression in going through that 300hp build that was a gotta-have-it replacement.
I know a couple people with different cars that have had valve springs and/or valves do their motor in.

He doesn't necessarily need them but stiffer ones would be more suitable if he was trying to raise the rev limiter. If he was trying rev higher without the proper valve springs, he could experience valve float.
The springs should be fine as far as the power he's looking for.
2K5SS/SC? 11-20-2006, 01:53 AM I believe the Stage 2+1 race head includes better springs and such IIRC.
Pooch 11-20-2006, 02:06 AM what HP are you shooting for? sounds like you'll be able to get her up to the 450-500HP range. sounds fun

I think the JBP stage 2 read had has all that included.
BTW whats the difference between a JBP Stage 2+1 Race Head and a stage 3

The Head I am getting comes with everything new in the head. Nothing stock will be left in the head besides the Stock Valve Guides.

Stage 3 Head uses mainly Ferrea Parts including the valves and everything. The stage 2 head uses all JBP parts. Its funny because on their site all the JBP parts are more expensive than the Ferrea parts so why pay $800 more for the stage 3 head when the stage 2 head is technically worth more... Anyway the +1 stands for the Head being Coated to reduce heat. also I will have their Stage 2 Cams

Hopefully Ill be over 350 and if Im superlucky over 400 with water/meth.
06noscobaltss 11-20-2006, 11:37 PM Well the car is officially in the shop. Will be taking the motor out and starting to tear into it tomorrow. I will take plenty of pics of old parts next to new parts when they start rolling in. so far the total will parts/labor and things is $7400. whew!
bdwarr6 11-20-2006, 11:48 PM wuss do it yourself FTW
anyway congrats man wish i had the cash for some jbp parts
I went a different route, and i learned alot and now feel competant to do my own work for my turbo setup

SilverSS/SC 11-22-2006, 07:47 PM Good luck with it all . Im really intereted to see how some of these head/cam combo's are gonna come out . Are you still gonna use the M62 ?
06noscobaltss 11-22-2006, 09:46 PM Good luck with it all . Im really intereted to see how some of these head/cam combo's are gonna come out . Are you still gonna use the M62 ?
M62- Yes for now... hehe. soon to be a Super 20G from Hahn! but shhhhh!
sunfirejoe 11-22-2006, 11:48 PM go to the redline forums theres a guy im getting my head done through thats tops the JBP head for price im paying 900 and essentially getting the same head as stage 3 from jbp, WHAT JBP CHARGESn is ridicolous
SilverSS/SC 11-23-2006, 01:46 AM WHAT JBP CHARGESn is ridicolous
I thought the same thing .....hell , a PAIR of heavily ported complete LS2 heads cost much less than 1 stg3 JBP eco head .
Cool on the turbo 06 .....hate to see that very capable engine wheezing thru a collapsed lung :twothumbs
sunfirejoe 11-23-2006, 09:47 PM i also foudn he excact same cams JBP sells for 200 bucks cheaper :D, gournd by the sam guy but sold through a different company
06noscobaltss 11-26-2006, 03:51 PM Update: Motor is out torn down. Blower was sent out for porting, Head will be sent out on Monday to JBP for the Stage 2+1 head and cams, Block is going to the Machine Shop for tear down and putting pistons, rods, neutral balance shafts, and balancing it all, My SPEC Stage 3 Clutch is gone! Something went way wrong with the clutch it was shit!
That sucks to hear about your clutch. Was it defective? Got any pics?
cobaltBlackss 11-26-2006, 10:15 PM i also foudn he excact same cams JBP sells for 200 bucks cheaper :D, gournd by the sam guy but sold through a different company

06noscobaltss 11-27-2006, 12:43 AM That sucks to hear about your clutch. Was it defective? Got any pics?
No not defective. I only got 10k miles out of it and only to the track once. I will never go with SPEC again. A Stage 3 clutch should be able to take much more abuse than what I gave it. It slipped on 1-2 and 2-3 sometimes even the 3-4 shifts! It was just a shitty clutch. The springs got knicked from something and the friction material was almost gone. Maybe would have gotten like 1-2k miles out of what was left with no WOT runs!

Wow. That sucks. A clutch like that shouldn't be doing what you said, I agree.

It was definitely the worst purchase I have made for what I paid. It was the only clutch out for our cars at the time when I got it figures that like 3 weeks later Centerforce came out with one and then like 2-3 months later the Exedy one came out... So now Im stuck paying another 1,300 for an Exedy Stage 3 clutch! woo hoo. But words from me are... DO NOT BUY SPEC CLUTCHES!

lol coincidence.
sunfirejoe 11-27-2006, 01:22 AM spec has been holding out for me, and many others, did u purchase a regular stage 3, and maybe u dont know how to drive ;)
also could have been jsuta defective clutch ahve u called spec
zinner 11-27-2006, 08:15 AM Everyone has had trouble with aftermarket clutch, not just spec, but also the FX series of clutches.
06noscobaltss 11-27-2006, 10:53 PM Update: Long Block is at the Machine Shop gettin torn apart, Blower is at another machine shop getting ported, Head has been sent to Canada to JBP for Stage 2+1 head and Cams, Parts that have came in: Sleeves, Neutral Balance Shafts
Parts not in yet: Pistons, Rods, Head Gasket, Head Studs, Clutch.
06noscobaltss 11-29-2006, 12:09 AM Update: Diamond Pistons came today. Haha its funny because The cobalt is a 4 cylinder... they sent me 5 pistons....all the rings for 5 pistons, and then they sent me 8 piston pins!!! woo hoo for directly ordering through Diamond for free shit!
06noscobaltss 11-29-2006, 12:20 AM 5 cylinder conversion!
haha might as well! extend the block! get that 5 cylinder Saab motor!
WopOnTour 11-29-2006, 01:39 AM What outfit is machining your block for the Darton kit and fitting your pistons?
Do they have a Sunnen CV-616? (as recommended by Darton)
What bore size are you going to use? 86mm?
Good Luck on the build
Wop
Do they have a Sunnen CV-616? (as recommended by Darton)
True, JBPs' boring mill to do ECOTEC sleeves costs $24,000CDN. Be careful of shops claiming to be able to do everything. Better to head to a shop that specializes in ECOTECs. ;)
bdwarr6 11-29-2006, 04:05 AM The shop i went to garunteed their work or they replace the block
06noscobaltss 11-29-2006, 10:47 AM The shop i went to garunteed their work or they replace the block
Yes same here. they guaranteed their work on the block as well as re-balancing the crank with the rods and pistons also fully balanced!
crossed over 11-29-2006, 01:11 PM not meaning to put usless post in her as im not knowledgable like you guys but , this is what we need to do to our motors to get 350+whp??

No Im building my car for over 400whp right now! and just doing everything first because the rods are good for 600-700 whp but I just wanted to replace them while I had it all apart because the turbo should be on soon to make that power!
06blackg85ss 11-29-2006, 01:19 PM oh yeah just adding in I'm working with rippmods to get them to start porting our heads at a much better price... as soon as we work out the details I'll let you guys know...
but I"m donating my spare head as the guinea pig so lets see what happens.

Nice! Too bad my head will have already been done but oh well. Let me know what you see as gains!
bdwarr6 11-29-2006, 01:49 PM use the 7/10ths rule
build it and only use 7/10th of what it can hold that ways its safe
tcolli17 11-29-2006, 04:24 PM Kind of an unrelated question- What's the most hp you can get with the m62, whippie, m90, or new TVS's coming out. This would be with the set up you are doing- full port and polish, built top and bottom, etc. I eventually want to get around 450-500 hp with a supercharger.
06noscobaltss 01-16-2007, 12:52 PM Well just wanted to bring this thread back to life. Head is finally back from JBP and its insane! Motor will be done in 2-3 days from being built. Car will then be put back together and tuned and then will finally hit the road again.
Just letting whoever cares on here that my build is coming along great no extra surprises and that it will be done by the weekend! woot!
06blackg85ss 01-16-2007, 12:56 PM nice.... keep us posted man... should be a fast little fucker

well it depends on how crazy the cam is, i wouldnt think you would need to as long as you have the same clearance as the old ones and hopefully you dont get any valve chatter. sounds like an awesome build.
06noscobaltss 01-21-2007, 10:17 PM Yea Im damn excited plus the next stop is at Hahn racecraft. but this build will be done this Fri. I will drive the car around for about a month to make sure it breaks in proper then build 2 will start at Hahn. Ill post up Dyno sheets, Dyno Vid of it making that run so everyone knows what it puts out without everyone saying BS!
BACK2GM 01-22-2007, 12:58 AM So whats coming from Hahn just the exhaust or is there more?
06noscobaltss 01-22-2007, 10:20 AM So whats coming from Hahn just the exhaust or is there more?

GLTHSWrestler 01-28-2007, 07:08 PM hey how much did you pay for all the parts?? im thinking of doing the same
06noscobaltss 01-29-2007, 02:04 AM im over 7k in parts right now. just for this build. I already had about 5k in parts before this build
sunfirejoe 01-29-2007, 02:30 AM i thikn im sitting close to you parts, but i went different routes of vendors, and bought at different times, itll be fun to see in the future what happens,
i got a local guy to do my head who been doing heads for over 50 years so itll be fun to see, i dont know it might not be JBP specs but he said hes guaranteeing 13% increase in flow, now im just waiting on my ferrera valve train but i need money 1st,
im waiting for a cheaper source for rods, but mind u i do believe your going turbo itll be interesting to see some of the cars that are getting built as we speak this upcoming summer, the tracks are gonna be over run with SUPERBALTS lol
NGalaxyTimmyo 01-29-2007, 10:38 AM can't wait to see all this stuff on the street

06blackg85ss 03-23-2007, 08:23 AM good luck man.... hope it stays together this time.
