Question about warrenty and HPT

If I took a backup from HPT then buy a second ecu from a junk car and use that for my mod.

If I put the original back in the car can gm tell I have done anything?

I have a friend that wants to do this with a second ECU but does not to loose warranty.

sounds like it should work. i'm not sure if the ECM has the VIN "hard-coded" into it tho.

You can use the other ECU - however i'm not sure if it will record differences in mileage or not if you put the old ECU back in... I'm sure somebody on here knows more about how the ECU works and can shed some light on your question

from what I understand, you can do that, however, you won't be able to just switch the ecu. I believe you have to take the car up to a dealership and have the car "learn" the new ecu.

However, I think you can get past this with HPT, by doing a write entire, which will put your vin number on the ecu.

I'm sure you'll get a definite answer by tonight.

the tech would really have to get into your compuet to find out, that being said, for everyday warrenty work they will not be able to tell you have HPT

Why don't you just save the stock flash and restore it when you need to? I could have sworn that was an option...

yeah.. but if you tune for your mods.. then flash the stock tune to take it in.. your car will run like ****. and could be very dangerous depending on the mods you have

Honestly, if you're that worried about your warranty...don't modify your car and get a used vehicle as a project car.

It's like if you're afraid of fires, don't become a fireman.

Well said my friend, well said.

Now to the OP,

If your a warranty-***** like myself, then consider the following mods because they will be completely warranty-safe.

1) GM Stage 2
2) GM catback exhaust (4 options, all rock)
3) GM honed exhaust manifold
4) Intake (or air box mod)
5) Ingalls Torque dampener (takes 5 mins to remove but you shouldn't have to)
6) Hurst short throw shifter (yep its a gm part now)

These next mods are not specifically warranty-safe, but you should not have any problem unless your dealership are complete douchebags.

1) GM Dual pass intercooler mod
2) GM Stage 3 pulley
3) GM competitive driving knuckles

Hope this helps! If its any consolation, i have been in the shop for warranty work a gazillioin times and all my mods are completely safe.

Umm..is he planning on buying the car after the lease?

If not, it's pretty pointless and can actually be negative when it comes to modifying the car.
