Pull up on the reverse lock out. It's under the shift knob.

And read your manual.

Hum, if your serious i will try to answer your question. Im not sure if the SS only comes in standerd but if its auto then put your foot on the brake, put your hand on the shifter push in the little button and pull it into the little R button.
If its standered then push in the clutch put the shifter into the bottom right or R then proceed like starting into First. Put very gently.

I'm guessing not because I've never had to pull my shift knob up to put the car in reverse. Strange they'd only put this on the SS and not all models of Cobalts but I prefer mine without.

Thats strange, i know i cant put my car into reverse while in forward motion. It locks me out that way, but no little button.

Me too!

I don't feel so bad! I'm not the first one who couldn't figure out reverse right away! I totally freaked when I thought it wouldn't go into reverse!

Yeah, there's been more than a few posts on here about this, you're not the first. My salesman couldn't figure it out, and if I hadn't of already read about it on here, I probably would of been dog-cussing the car too.

another thought......

Has anyone noticed that unless your movements are VERY deliberate while shifting into reverse on the SS that there is a slight vibration (rumble) in the stick when you do it? The best way to describe it is like the vibration on an xbox or ps2 controller.

Works much smoother with clutch all the way in.

yeah when going into reverse, and in 3rd gear ...for some reason when the shifter is in 3rd gear, it has an abnormal amount of play, and vibrates.."like a ps2 controller" ...i duno its weird because all of my other gears are tight..anybody else?

My 96 and 98 Cavaliers did NOT have the reverse lockout feature... that was started in 2000. My 1984 and 1985 Cavaliers had the reverse lockout too...
Odd, only the SS transmission have the lockout? Weird.

3rd gear is more sensitive to tranny vibrations and flexing for some reason. It's normal.

Yah i also noticed that when in 3rd gear you can feel the stick rattling and your can hear a sort of grinding noise

Yeah, mine's the same in that gear. I'm thinking it's normal, but if someone knows for sure, let us know.
