Hum, if your serious i will try to answer your question. Im not sure if the SS only comes in standerd but if its auto then put your foot on the brake, put your hand on the shifter push in the little button and pull it into the little R button.
If its standered then push in the clutch put the shifter into the bottom right or R then proceed like starting into First. Put very gently.

I'm guessing not because I've never had to pull my shift knob up to put the car in reverse. Strange they'd only put this on the SS and not all models of Cobalts but I prefer mine without.

Yeah, there's been more than a few posts on here about this, you're not the first. My salesman couldn't figure it out, and if I hadn't of already read about it on here, I probably would of been dog-cussing the car too.
another thought......
Has anyone noticed that unless your movements are VERY deliberate while shifting into reverse on the SS that there is a slight vibration (rumble) in the stick when you do it? The best way to describe it is like the vibration on an xbox or ps2 controller.

Works much smoother with clutch all the way in.

the first week or so with my SS it was tough to get into 5th gear, it was really touchy and i actually just backed off a few times, im not sure if it just needed to be broke in or i was not going over far enough i don't have problems anymore
