cobalt SS/SC or mkV GTI
I considered the GTI also but with the options I wanted (leather, wheels, aero kit) it was like $27K. When you do a comparison on the web spec by spec and consider the after market, the Cobalt SS/SC is just a better buy. Depreciation.....in this price range, who cares.
Don't care about the performance in this decision just the looks.
The GTI looks like an Egg why would you want to drive in an egg. They Break Easily.
look at those VW commercials Every one I have seen so far a Jetta gets demolished.
They don't show a GTI in that commercial because there will be nothing left of the car to show after it gets hit.

lol, he came to a cobalt forum site and asked the cobalt people if he should buy a cobalt or a GTI lol
go t a GTI site and they will tell you buy a GTI and list things wrong with the SS/SC lol
thought that was funny!
but I would reccomend the cobalt because I will never buy a VW, TOO many problems with all of my friends Jettas and GTIs and such

It was a tough decision for me when I bought mine. The 2 deciding factors were the price with options added in and the fact that Lordstown makes Cobalts, and my job is 40% Lordstown traffic.
VW reliability has gone down the crapper, not that chevy is rated high either lol. Test drive them both and get whatever floats your boat. The SS will be cheaper to mod as it's been out a few more years than the new GTI. They're both great cars though, so you can't go wrong either way!
I had the same choice last year and chose the SS, even after coming out of a mk4 GTI. Personally, when it came down to actually buying the car, the SS was the best bang for the buck performance wise and comfortability wise. As much as I ilke the solid feel of the VW, I didn't like everything else all that much. Expect to pay 27-28k for a pkg 2 with the DSG.
You can get a new 6spd GTI right off the lot for around $20-22K so it's comparable in price to an SS/SC with G85. I have driven both and found the VW GTI to be smoother riding and shifting than my SS. They both have great power and handeling, but the SS/SC nudges it out . The looks are all dependent on what you like. I love SS/SC's looks, but hated the gay spoiler so I removed mine. I love the looks of the GTI if it is black or slate gray. Both vehicles have a decent aftermarket support as well. The new GTI's 2.0FSI has been pushed with turbo upgrades up to 350whp and almost 400wtrq without any issues. The DSG tranny is what is unreliable on the GTI, so get the 6spd. THe axles and clutch suck on the SS/SC so watch out for those. Please do yourself a favor and test drive both before you make the decision. An educated decision is far better than an undeucated one. Good Luck!
In terms of reliability of the MKV's.. I have 11,500 miles and 13 months with mu jetta, and the only one problem I've had is the battery in my fob is dead.
GTI costs more, but will require less performance mods, IE: Chip plus turbo back.
SSSC Costs less, and can go faster in a straight line Stock.
I couldn't be happier with my purchase.
Good luck with your pick!

I voted GTI cuz its a pretty co car and with SPR S2 it's 250whp and 300tq. But more so because if you descion is between and 2 door and a hatchback, if you get the 2 door you'll be upset every now and than about nothing getting a hatchback for whatever you hatchback boys do.

My neighbor owns an 06 G85 SS S/C, and his brother owns an 06 GTI. I asked them both which car they prefer and they both like the SS better. The things they said they liked were the shifter, the seats (recaros), and the power. Take it for what its worth!
hey
u realize ur posting this in a cobalt forum if u posted this in a gti forum theyd say ooohhhh the cobalt is a slow pos i kill them by 15 lengths when my flux campacitor hits the continum transfunctioner! cobalt ss dawg its the new pimp **** !
Ok that question is only going to get you a biased answer. This is a cobalt site.
I know a few people with the new GTI's with paddle shifter. The car is very nice, it moves alright and with a chip it will be as fast as our car is stock, but as they come...it's slower from what i have seen in person.
The GTI is over priced.
I personaly think they are kinda ugly like those 2003 Civic SI hatch backs that looked like a little minivan.
One of the guys i know with one refused to take it to the track becuase he said with traction they blow out the tranny and it's like $10K to get the thing fixed becuase it's so "hi tech". I told him if hi-tech is fragile i don't want it.

looks like im getting a ss/sc did some mroe research on the side and i like the idea of a cobalt with performance upgrades that still covered by warranty unlike the GTI that and a supercharger is better than a turbo any day unless we talking compounded and parrellel quad turbo's then thats a diff story
Most dealers will honor the warranty after they install the chip for you. (same for Audi and VW)
Let me gather more research, but I also believe that a TB exhaust is still cool too.

I set out to buy an mk4 golf TDi but ended up with an SS/SC, the main thing for me was the reliability of the VW. Now I'm reconsidering selling my ss/sc for a tdi. I say if you want something quick and fun to mod go cobalt, if you want something comfortable to drive everyday and do some appearance and light performance mods to go GTI. If you want something fast don't make it your DD.
