Re-painting calipers

i previously painted my calipers black and it really hasnt been looking like i was hoping. i have an orange ss and i wanna repaint them orange to match.

my question is...

is it ok to just paint right over the black paint thats already on it?

i really dont have the time and even if i did have time, i wouldnt have the patience or the means to take off the black paint.

I think it should be ok just make sure they are clean and dry. I half assed mine when i did mine. I didnt even go to the dealership to get the color matched paint. I just used a base coat of chevy orange and then went over it with some burnt orange metallic and it turned out great.

like boosted said, just scuff it up a little and you then make sure the surface is clean and it should stick ok.

might be able to find some at a parts store. or go to a local paint shop and have them mix some up for you that is the same color as your car. have them but it in a paint can. then apply it by brush or how ever you want to do it

It's better to get the old paint off! The more paint you put on the calipers, the less heat they can release. Hot calipers are bad JuJu! Take the calipers off and go get them bead blasted. I'm tellin ya know man, you keep all that built up paint on them and your gonna fry your calipers. Pistons and all! I speak from experience!

I would suggest dupli colors "metal cast" paint for this. It's a high temp paint so you should have no problems. It's really for anodizing, but if you use several coats it looks just like sunburst orange. Then hit it with a high temp clear afterwards to protect it.

I have heard many people using the GM factory stuff with no problems, but that stuffs expensive and when I used it on my fuel rail cover it bubbled right by the valve covers so I'm not 100% certain it holds up to heat well. I'm thinking the guys using it on the brakes maybe are heating the brakes up much. I don't know, I would rather use a high temp paint to be safe.

It's only $10 bucks a can....matches perfectly though...2 cans will get the job done with some left over....I bought 4 cans and used them elsewhere...its always nice to have left over cause you never know when you will need it. Course I have a dealer hookup, so I got them a little cheaper than $10 though.

damn. i might have to get that from gmpartsdirect. so if i go with the chevy paint, what should i do?

give a little sand and scruff it up?
just mask off the whole area or do i gotta take off the caliper? (no idea how to take it off)
then do i gotta clear coat or anything? (no experience with clearcoat)

Dude, its stupid silly...Scuff them up, then remove the calipers...Only 2 ea (10mm I think) bolts on the rear...the get some newspaper and cover up the rotor...remove the pads as well...wait till you see how much soot in on them...the wif blew them out with some compressed air...check the condition of your rotors while you are at it. Be careful not to let them hang from the rubber line. Just let them rest on top of the rotor.

I didn't clear mine since I couldn't find a good high temp clear....now Walmart has it all instock...its a high temp engine clearcoat dyno tested (how the **** do you dyno test paint????) up to 500F. That should work just fine...
