View Full Version : Stick a FORK in my Tranny b/c its DONE!!
Rangerondubz 03-04-2007, 09:09 PM Well lastnight I was driving home from the Car Show, and next thing I know I have no 3rd or 4th gear(it felt like it was in neutral when I would push it into 3rd & 4th like nothing was there). So I pull over at a gas station and pulled the center console out and made sure all the linkages were good and connected(I do have a B&M STS) and everything checks out. So I drive over to my GF's friends house and call my buddy who is a Service Tech at the local Chevrolet dealership and he tells me to shut the car off and try to put it in gear w/ the car off and the clutch in(too see if my syncros were bad) and so everything checks out and I crank it bad up and it is stuck in 5th no matter WHERE the shifter is at 1st, 2nd, neutral, reverse ect. So we push it out of the driveway and drive it like that(stuck in 5th) over to my GF's house(2 stops) and ALL I can smell is clutch from me having to pedal it to go in 5th(from a dead stop) So after checking the linkages and everything on the transmission itself and everything checks out. So I have my GF take me home and the next morning I go back over to look at it somemore and I bring my Cousin(who is a mechanic) with me to help me look and diagnos the problem. So I crank it back up and now all of a sudden it goes into 1st, 2nd, 5th and reverse but still no 3rd or 4th(before it was suck in 5th the whole time). So my cousin takes a look at it and diagnos's it as the forks in the transmission are broke in half for the neutral gears(3rd & 4th). Which also would explain why I have a rattling/clunking/tapping sound in my transmission. Soo tommorow the car goes to the Chevrolet dealership to have warranty work done and I have already removed the B&M STS just to make sure I dont have any problems! I will update w/ further details when I bring the car in/get it back. You guys think I should drive it to the dealership or have it towed??
Ljavy17 03-04-2007, 09:13 PM call 1800 Chev Tech< its free towing for chevys. Im sorry about ur tranny man, I just got a new one installed.
JCswoosher2 03-04-2007, 09:16 PM but if they dont cover it. Then you have to pay the towing fees
CobaltBurst 03-04-2007, 09:19 PM im sure they will try to blame performance mods if you have them as well.. stripem off imo
Ljavy17 03-04-2007, 09:20 PM thats not true, Who told you that. I had my car towed because I fuked up a fuse IN which I had to pay 100 dlls for and I did NOT have to pay for thw towing.
Rangerondubz 03-04-2007, 09:25 PM call 1800 Chev Tech< its free towing for chevys. Im sorry about ur tranny man, I just got a new one installed.
Thanks man!
this isnt cool the past couple months i have noticed more and more that 3rd and 4th are getting tougher to select.
Rangerondubz 03-04-2007, 09:40 PM this isnt cool the past couple months i have noticed more and more that 3rd and 4th are getting tougher to select.
Yea it just happened all of a sudden, I have had a problem w/ hitting 3rd gear though...
cobaltssTH 03-04-2007, 09:41 PM hopefully you dont have any warranty issues
slamedham 03-04-2007, 09:47 PM i jsut got a new tranny put in my SS S/C and i'm stock as a bird. then a new master clutch cyclinder and now my throw bearing is messed as i have no clutch. i had to power shift all the way home. its a damn good thing i drive rigs all bloody day or else the power shifting would have taken some getting used to. lol
Red2.4SS/SC 03-04-2007, 09:47 PM Yea it just happened all of a sudden, I have had a problem w/ hitting 3rd gear though...
as in when racing you miss third ????????
Rangerondubz 03-04-2007, 11:25 PM as in when racing you miss third ????????
Well yea racing.....
BullDog71ss 03-04-2007, 11:36 PM I lost the tranny in mine before I traded it. Wheel hop at the track was so bad it cracked the tranny case. I think it's safe to say that these cars have week trannies.
So if you don't want your tranny to break, don't drive your Cobalt...??? Wtf.

Yeah man, same fuckin shit happened to me. Not even 2 months after I had my car, the fuckin clutch went. I never want to smell burnt clutch again. Then a few weeks ago, my 3rd n 4rd gear grinded going into gear, and the night before I brought it in, I had my gf in the car, and I shift into 3rd, n its in nuetral, same thing for 4th. My forks were fucing snapped. They replaced i think 2 forks, 3rd and 4th gear synchros and a whole ton of shopping list goodies. Good looks on the Power Train warranty though :twothumbs . But All in all, the fuckin clutches in the cobalts blow. When i blew it, the tow truck driver said that my car was the like the 5th balt they tower that week with a blown clutch. And I hate how the dealership asks u a shitload of questions when u know whats wrong and u tell them. I said my clutch was blown and they're like how do u know? Well it has a distinct smell and when ur in gear and the car isnt moving, ur fucked. lol. but yeah, shitty dude. But been there, done that, prolly be back there very soon. lol. Were u power shifting? Thats how I fucked my shit up in the first place. I learned quick, balts can't power shift, :nono:
tim.t 03-04-2007, 11:47 PM Not to be an ass, folks, but if you abuse it, you're going to lose it. If you're playing "can't find it, grind it" on a regular basis when dragging, shouldn't be too surprised that you broke something.
And if you're experiencing enough wheel hop to crack the tranny case, maybe you didn't have enough support mods to handle the power you were putting down.
Just IMO, ya know? Not trying to say you all don't know what you're doing. Just saying that this is what it sounds like to me.
Good luck getting it fixed, Ranger. Hoping the best for your 'balt. Later.

Yea, I bought my car preowned and im pretty sure it was from the previous driver, but thanks

so the stock clutches suck? I guess thats why my stock clutch has over 18,000 miles, @50 1/4 mile passes, and over 290 whp and has never slipped once... yeah thats pretty terrible for a stock clutch.
R33P3R007 03-05-2007, 11:51 AM so the stock clutches suck? I guess thats why my stock clutch has over 18,000 miles, @50 1/4 mile passes, and over 290 whp and has never slipped once... yeah thats pretty terrible for a stock clutch.
W3rd... i have 22000 miles, a bunch of mods, and i would say 20 passes 5 with DR's. no problems here.
distillion 03-05-2007, 11:54 AM are the LSD trannies failing?
06blackg85ss 03-05-2007, 12:08 PM I personally haven't seen one blow up yet.. seen 3 non lsd ones shoot the pin through the housing. but thats about it
2K5SS/SC? 03-05-2007, 12:13 PM Sorry to hear about your tranny man. Trust me when I say I know exavtly where you're standing right now as I just put mine all back together a couple weeks ago.
Distillion, my LSD trans broke third gear, but that was due to the shift linkage failing causing a few missed shifts ultimately breaking 3rd gear after the linkage was replaced.

I havent had any problems w/ my clutch either, except when I got it from the previous owner and I have 36000 miles
Rangerondubz 03-05-2007, 08:14 PM I droped it off at the Dealership today, they wont be able to look at it until tommorow, I will update w/ I figure out more details. Hopefully this wont be a long process...
06blackg85ss 03-05-2007, 08:46 PM I wish you good luck man... dealerships around me won't fix anything drivetrain related under warranty
yellowcobaltss05 03-05-2007, 08:52 PM i had the same thing but with 2nd, if you miss 3rd or 4th alot when racing then the shift cable pins become loose and eventually break
Rangerondubz 03-05-2007, 08:59 PM I wish you good luck man... dealerships around me won't fix anything drivetrain related under warranty
Why is that?? Thanks, Im hoping they will cover it once they figure out what the problem is...
Red07SS 03-05-2007, 09:15 PM When i was pulling out of my street onto us19 last night i was on it and it Slipped the Clutch BAD, As in smoke and the nasty smell of the clutch. my car has just over 9000 miles on it.

Were you shifting? Or just driving along?
Red07SS 03-05-2007, 09:36 PM Were you shifting? Or just driving along?
When i shifted into 2nd i was probably at 6000RPM fully depresed the clutch shifted to 2nd dropped the clutch and had it to the floor. Almost could call it granny shifting, I wasn't in a hurry just like hearing the supercharger whine.
I could feel the car trying to go forward so i didn't miss 2nd it was just slipping likw crazy. After it slipt I pushed the clutch in again and reset it i guess you could call it and it still wasn't moveing. This morning on the way to work i didn't notice anything abnormal though.

Hmm yea I wouldnt try to do that to much lol, atleast you didnt burn up your clutch prob just wore a couple millimeters off
yellowcobaltss05 03-05-2007, 09:54 PM that's still not good lol

too many noobs out here beating the shit out of their cars and blowing tranny's... probably btwn 10-15 so far out in NY that I know of... So the Reps come out everytime a balt is in the shop and void em... and like mine red flag em... (I broke an axle at the track, and they voided my warranty because of exhaust)
1gmfanatik 03-06-2007, 07:19 AM 10k and still goin on the stock clutch and mine was used by GM as their Ride and Drive for the NOPI shows and races. Oh, and I'm def not stock..lol

Wow that makes no sense, I hope the same thing doesnt happen to me over exhaust
06blackg85ss 03-06-2007, 11:34 AM as long as not that many balts have been brought in, you should be ok
Rangerondubz 03-06-2007, 12:44 PM as long as not that many balts have been brought in, you should be ok
My buddy went there for his S2 install but other than that im not aware of any Cobalts in Jville having a failure like mine, well atleast an SS, so I should be good!
06blackg85ss 03-06-2007, 12:50 PM that is always good
CobaltBurst 03-06-2007, 01:32 PM Wow that makes no sense, I hope the same thing doesnt happen to me over exhaust
heh thats why i said strip your mods, they will blame any HP increasing mod around here. Saying the tranny wasnt made to support the extra power etc.

Yea but I cant just take my exhaust off, its all welded in except the DP and plus I dont have the stock catback, if they try to say some shit like that I will ask them to prove it to me..
that is always good
Chea

they do suck i know 3 people personally that have clutch problems thats sad! Mine has slipped since the second week I bought it new. Of course GM says their isn't a fix yet so they won't touch it. I know not all of the clutches are bad but with as many people that have problems with them I would say as a whole they blow! I mean I love my car but I can't even be shift into second if im on the gas hard without it slipping One of these days I'd love to hear a Chirp into second lol so frustrating
Rangerondubz 03-06-2007, 02:17 PM did you use the number I gave you yet.
It didnt work for me, for some reason I dk why, but it was safe enough to drive it to the dealership. I have a card for my extended GMPP Warranty that I can call for roadside assistance anytime anywhere, but thanks for the help. That # seemed like it was too long?

Yeah I know 3 people that killed their clutches within 600 miles of getting the car... but they drove like idiots and didn't know how to drive the car correctly (I.E. riding the clutch, slipping the hell out of it and glazing it over.etc etc)...
strange I guess.
and BTW ever notice how exedy doesn't offer a stg I clutch for our cars.......... cause thats what comes stock.
oh and also I can chirp 3rd at the track on stock clutch and tires.... and spin all of second if I wanted... proper break in is key with these clutches... I gave mine about 1000 miles of niceness before giving it hell and it never failed me once. Only reason its coming out soon is I don't think it would hold over 350 wtq ... lol

NOT ALL OF THE CLUTCHES ARE BAD BUT A LOT ARE! and it isn't because people don't know how to drive well i take that back im sure some cases are lol anyways im just saying I have 3 friends that have the same problem as me and they aren't little idiot kids that abuse their car. but I am happy for you ur lucky ur clutch has held up so strong
Rangerondubz 03-06-2007, 02:29 PM When I first got my car it slipped like a bitch from the previous owner but now I can burn 2nd on command, but I dk if I can bark 3rd, oh course my tires really dont scream so I dont really know if I am or not
06blackg85ss 03-06-2007, 02:31 PM only reason I found that out I was at the track and someone taped my run,.,. (3rd gear chirp)..
but only thing I've ever seen that was an actual defect with the clutches is the slave cylinder, not the clutch itself
USMCFieldMP 03-06-2007, 02:31 PM A lot of Trannies breaking lately. My 2nd gear Synchro Blocker died back in December. EXPENSIVE!

It wasnt covered under warranty?
06blackg85ss 03-06-2007, 02:32 PM yeah thank god I got 2 set's of spare gears and input shafts and one good housing
USMCFieldMP 03-06-2007, 02:39 PM It wasnt covered under warranty?
No... GM will do an investigation. Your tranny might be covered. Mine was from shifting into 2nd gear too hard.

completely agree.
my clutch has slipped once. and it was because of my error. and i knew it.
its sad that people who truely do need a clutch/trans warranty claim have to fight it because of how many sideways hat wearing street racahs are working on their 3rd tranny and 4th clutch under GM warranty.

you know thats illegal right? for them to void the warranty for a exhaust...especialy from the axle breaking.
06blackg85ss 03-06-2007, 04:19 PM I tried that fight... didn't work... so whatever I had a lot more parts on the car I pulled off so I wasn't really fighting about it since my warranty was already technically voided.. I was just trying to get a quick set of axles instead of waiting for the DDS ones...
I wasn't really that pissed, plus they refunded my extended warranty without a fight.

Hmm I might try to get my money back for it, but il prob just keep it for when shit goes wrong like this
06blackg85ss 03-06-2007, 04:52 PM yeah I think I still have the rest of my 36000 mile warranty minus the powertrain and drivetrain... but I do know GM red flagged my car... so trading it in would not have worked, so I"m going balls out with it instead and going turbo with a built motor shortly... F WARRANTY....
also it helps that I work parttime as a mechanic and can fix this stuff myself... I also fix every one elses car around me that gets refused warranty work... and it's been quite a few.

Well thats always a plus to be a mechanic and just do your own shit and save some money in the process!
Rangerondubz 03-07-2007, 10:10 PM They tore apart the tranny today, but it wont get diagnosed until tommorow, but they did say it SHOULD be covered under warranty so I will keep my fingers crossed and see how that goes! I will update on further progress..
Rangerondubz 03-08-2007, 02:27 PM The service advisor told me today that they are going to replace my whole tranny w/ a new one, but they wouldnt tell me the reason why! So I asked if he could somehow put the LSD tranny in there and he said he would try but it usually has to be a direct replacement! I will be getting a call later on today to see when I will be getting it back!
Edit: The new transmission is being ordered/overnighted from Michigan, so that puts the tranny being here tommorow and me possibly getting my car back tommorow! This is awesome..
06blackg85ss 03-08-2007, 02:40 PM good to hear man... hopefully you get that nice LSD tag on the side too
yellowcobaltss05 03-08-2007, 03:40 PM man i hope u get the LSD tranny!!
Rangerondubz 03-08-2007, 03:57 PM man i hope u get the LSD tranny!!
Yea I know, he didnt specify which tranny they ordered but I hope it is the LSD!! :twothumbs
BlkDragon SS 03-14-2007, 01:52 PM Hmmm, I am having the same issue with my ride, GM said it'll 7-10 days ebfore they can source me a brand spanken new tranny, I just couldn't shift it into any of the gears or anything. The tech said it was fixed but it wasn't, so when he went on a test drive the whole tranny dropped, and they were al;l dumbfounded. Also they didn't give me any hastles about it either, also the clutch and fly wheel are in good shape and has no signs of abuse, and I can drive fairly hard at times. But they are sending the old tranny to GM's R&D dept. and they will let me know what let go. So I'll keep everyone posted.
Rangerondubz 03-14-2007, 11:45 PM They ordered me a new tranny and installed it and it was defective. The broken tranny they ordered took 2 days to get here(overnighted) and they ordered another one 2 days ago and it will be here tommorow and then it should be installed and everything is priority since they messed it up the first time. Il update when I get it back
Rangerondubz 03-16-2007, 07:39 AM Got my car back yesterday! The problem w/ the reverse not working on the new tranny was b/c of my shifter. So I told them I was going out of town today so they would hurry the process up and instead of ordering a new shifter they took one out of a brand new Cobalt SS/SC on the lot! Overall I am very impressed w/ the service at Gordon Chevrolet and damn im glad I got my car back! : )
