loud wailing noise when I go in reverese

Help! When I start backing my car up it makes a loud wailing noise. It's not in the brakes (I don't think) because I'm not even touching the brakes when this happens. It doesn't do it when I go forward, or atleast it hasn't yet. Anyone have any ideas on what this could be?

I hope it's a simple fix that I can do so I don't have to take my car to the stealership.

it seems as though its that normal 'reverse noise" my last car made that noise that your probably describing and that was a 5-spd. it seems prevelant in manuals.

hmmm, did it sounds like it was coming from the rear wheels? That's where it sounds like mine is coming from. I hope it's normal but it's only shown up in the last few days and it was REALLY loud today.

yeah I've heard that sound before, it's different then this.

It sort of sounds like a big truck stopping. It's like a wailing, haha, that's the best way I can put it.

I have heard it. It can get loud enough to about make you go deaf!! That happened to me about a week after I put on my Rear Sway Bar. I thought it was because I had a loose bolt. I checked and they were all still tight. I have just ignored it or backed up a little faster and it goes away. If you figure out what it is, let me know so I can go complain to get it fixed.

I'll let you know if I get it figured out. I may take it in next week and get the pros (I use that term loosely) to look at it.

Its because your reverse gear has straight cut teeth, every standard transmission car does this...

I was going to say this as well. Helical gears which I believe we have 1-5 are more quiet. But spur gears (Straight Cut) are very noisy (Reverse).

I haven't heard anything like what you guys are talking about! Every car I have owned has been a manual! Hmmmph, maybe I'm just lucky!

I don't hear any loud or ridiculous noise. If I get moving at a good speed while backing up, I do hear a mechanical whirring noise, which is how everyone described as the straight-cut backup sound.

Forthe guy who has the "grinding" noise, you don't want that. You want to cleanly release the clutch and add gas... usually if you hear that grinding, something didn't align correctly at speed.

No it's not that sound! I know what sound you guys are talking about and it's different. It's almost a metal on metal sound or sort of like if you were sliding a table across a kitchen floor.
