2.2 Sedan vs 2000 Miata MX-5

Ok, this is more of a question thread than anything. A guy in a 2000 mazda miata mx5 wants to race me tomorrow night, stock vs stock.

Mine is a stock 2.2L Auto, his a MX-5 standard.

From what I heard, they are both in the mid 16's range. He's not a very experienced driver I don't think, he just thinks he's fast because he can chirp his tires. I know it's a "driver's game", but take into account that I have an auto tranny, his is standard.

I doubt he even knows about brake launching, so I can probably take him from the launch, but I have no clue on the performance of his car from 3rd gear-on.

Any suggestions? Will I win or just get embarrassed?

*edit* If we do race, I will definitely get it on my camera phone.

The older models are about mid sixteens with a good driver.

The 2006 hauls nuts compared to the old ones, clocking in around 15.5

If you car is stripped of its back seats and spare tire/jack, with just you in the car, your car would run about the same in the 1/4 mile, so do what you gotta do, and hope he doesn't drive well

the 2000 MX-5 miata, stock, is rated at 140hp and 125tq

But the car only weighs 2332 lbs while our cobalts are like 2800.

take a look for yourself.

I'm basing my info off of Car and Driver's recorded quarter mile times with stock vehicles.

Ok, here's how it's going down.

Couldn't race today, (it's 4/20, cops are everywhere) but we will prolly do it tomorrow night.

I took out all my extra weight, tire/jack, and he will be riding with one of my friends because he wants to record it. Take into account that this guy weighs about 180-190 lbs.

So really, it's like I dropped almost 300 lbs if you compare it that way. Think I've got a shot under those conditions?

And btw, when I go from a dig with the brake start method at 1.5k rpm, I almost always burnout a little. Should I be? Isn't that the whole point?

Too bad you dont have an 05 or an 06 dude.

You can try it anyway, but since you have a different ECU it may not work.

In my 05, if I'm going to be doing any hard or spirited driving, I remove the emissions fuse.

I don't know what reactions it will have on an 07, but on 05s and 06s it confuses the ECU, and the ECU maxes the line pressure in the transmission. What does this mean? It means that the transmission acts as if it has a shift kit, the car takes almost no time at all between shifts. Although, it will throw a CEL for a few days.

Idk if it'll work in your 07 but its worth a try if you want. Remove the fuse then drive down the road, if your transmission shifts weird, then it will work for you, if it doesnt, replace your fuse.

Lmao, sounds dangerous....I like it. But at the same time I really would hate to destroy my tranny.

What would a basic injen intake do for me? Enough of a power gain to seal this deal?

It wont destroy your tranny. Blowing your fuse would have the same effect, do you really think GM would have manufactured a car, that when a simple fuse blew, the tranny self destructed?

I think it's worth a try, it takes a total of 30 seconds to remove the fuse and test to see whether it had an effect.

A shift kit on an automatic is one of the best mods you can do to shave time off in the quarter.

Do what you will, but in my eyes, what do you have to lose by just trying
