2006 WRX Transmission Gone...

Okay, so my buddy bought a 2006 Subaru WRX about two monthes ago with 2k miles on it. It now has 6k and the transmission completely went to crap when he was putting it in third about a week back. He takes it to the dealer and now the dealer may pull the "abuse" card. Can they do that and if they do do that, should he find a lawyer?? I don't think a car's tranny can be screwed after 4000 miles. Am I wrong? Thanks for all of your opinions in advance.

Can they do that? Of course. Subaru is known to go out looking for abusive drivers, as well.

Should he find a lawyer? I'd save my money and just buy a new transmission, but certainly after raising hell with them first.

Are you wrong? Yea. You can screw a tranny at 10 miles or 100,000 miles.

My $0.02...

Before he turned onto the highway it was fine, he gave it about 3/4 throttle, shifted at about 4500 and heard a clunking noise. What do you think could have happened? He's a spirited driver but he doesn't really drag race or any of that.

Bump for more opinions, guys come on!! lol

That sucks. I feel bad for my buddy though. He really doesn't need this right now. So, should he sell the car if this is going to keep happenin to him?

How much did the gears cost him? You think he should just do that now and not deal with the dealer if they pull the abuse card?

Normally you can't just replace the gears.. The case is Aluminum and will normally get mis-aligned in the process of the gears shitting the bed. The case should be found at a local yard, but have a VERY close look at the supports that the gears ride in for damage.

Yeah, don't have 5k lol. Was the car a WRX? How much do you think the dealer is going to tell him if they pull the abuse card?

this is a pretty common thing i have heard. People get these rally cars and do 5-6k launches with them. The awd is not made for that, its made for rally not hard drop clutch launches. I would fight it the best could with out a lawyer. Tell them to prove it was beaten, if they still wont help after a long fight. I say just eat it, and get a new tranny.... The law fee's will kill you.

Tell him best of luck! We are pullin for him.

It depends alot on how you treat it. there are peoplea that have never had any problems with their tranny, and there is others that mess it up real quick. My 04 wrx has like 45, 000 and its still doing good. I do drag race it but i dont pop the clutch on it off the launch, You just need to take care of it.

All cars are capable of lasting for years or months... It depends on the maintenance and how you drive it. Sometimes you just get unlucky.

Might get better opinions and/or help in the "General" or "Problems and Service" sections.... of a Subaru forum! LOL

Yeah, my buddy's on a Subaru forum. I just thought I'd get some of my fellow Cobalt owners' opinions. Thanks for the advice though.

Yeah, he was thinking of getting the STI tranny thrown into it. The dealer called him today. They are not going to fix anything on the car. They are saying it was abuse. He is pissed to say the least.

I say just fork up the dough for a STI tranny. It's probably his best bet to keep the problem from happening again. Remember, you have to pay to play!

The dealer told him and showed him that third gear was pretty much gone...all the teeth were sheared off and another gear in the car, some of the teeth were sheared off. Evidence is in their favor unfortunately.

Subarus trannies are known to crap out on drivers. One of my friends ended up putting different gears after 1st and 2nd literally shattered on him.
