2006 SS/SC - LOUD TICKING. CEL Running Rough

Car is stock. 26,000 miles. Only has 3" muffler on it. Before I got the exhaust installed I had a CEL from time to time. Would go off and on day to day. Got the exhaust installed...did the off and on thing for another month. ignored it. Now its on all the time. Car is running rough, there is a LOUD LOUD ticking coming from the engine bay. I hope it's not valve tick. I checked the oil and got plenty. Sometimes at stop lights it'll just stall. When I go to accelerate it'll die unless I rev it up high enough.

ANybody have these problems. Hopefully taking it in tommorow. Ugh.

you might want to get over to the dealer and have them check it out. there is a TSB about timing chain tensioner issues with some of the cars. some of the members here have had this issue and have had it fixed.

I'm no saying that is what the problem is, i'm just saying that this is a strong possibility.

oh also the CEL when it was going on and off, it seems to only go on when it was hot out. When it was cold it would stay off and run great.

MI weather is up and down so thought this might help!

Thanks for the suggestion 06blackSC

so you've been throwing codes for a long time, but never thought to see what it is? even though it was getting worse and worse? next time have the code scanned right away so you can at least know what it is. you're muffler has nothing to do with the code.

if interested, I can check the CEL out and possbily help pin point the issue later this afternoon. I have HP Tuners and we can do a variety of checks. I'm going to say that sounds like a plugged CAT or a malfuctioning sensor.

PM me for more details.

I didn't think it was a big deal. Thought it might be the weather or something and it didn't effect the performance at first. I would just be sitting in traffic and it would go off. Shrugs shoulder. Now that it's affecting my driving was a good push to make me take it in.

Next time I'll be right on it.

All these problems and CEL's started after I got in an accident and had it fixed by the dealer. So I set up an appointment with them tommorow at 8 am. Hopefully sneaky can help me tonight.

I sent you a PM sneaky

plugged cat would be a reasonable guess

I've setup a time to meet up with him either at his work or on his lunch. either way we will get an idea of what is going on right now tonight when I get out of work.

after thinking about it. I'm going to say it's a bad header o2 sensor. He is explaning some of the same symptoms I was having originally.

Well ladies and gentlemen. Sneaky is the man. He stopped by my work and scanned my car for me and found out it was a "Camshaft position sensor". It totally explains everything.

It'll be going into the shop first thing tommorow.

Really, thank you alot sneaky.

Just for people who have this problem in the future here are the codes it thru.

P0017 Camshaft Position Sensor
P0341 Camshaft Postion Performance Sensor
P0300 Engine Misfire

AND it shot a Lean code.

I'll give you guys an update. I'm mad though I won't have this car for the dream cruise. Anybody want to rent me a hot car?

LOL

I believe it may be more due to the fact every time the cams make a revolution it's bouncing on a broken internal (the ticking noise). You cannot feel it physicaly on the valve cover BUT that doesn't rule anything out either.

He will definitely need new spark plugs, a new cam sensor, and the lean code is due to the warmer weather and the fact that it's getting an inaccurate reading on cam angle. His timing graph looked like short term fuel trims during cruise except at idle bouning all over the place (spikes between -9 & 17). Obviously that is not normal.

Just got off the phone with them. It has some problems...hahha...apparently cuz it was so bad the lifters got damaged...hence the horrible ticking....

They gotta replace the lifters, ECM sensor and some other stuff. The woman didn't go into too much detail so I told her to have the tech guy call me. They can't get parts til monday or so so it won't be done long into next week. Picking up my rental in an hour.

I'll get some more details later!

At least they are fixing it. Now you would think though that they would investigate everything and order all the parts at once instead of one part here, one part there.

Another Update. Called the dealer at three, tensiner replacement didn't work. Said they gotta look at it again. Got a call today at 6 from my CSR (customer service represenitive) saying they replaced the camshaft position sensor was just replaced and the engine light was off that it was ready to be picked up. I said ok tommorow. An hour later I get another call from another CSR saying that as they were cleaning it up and running it the CEL went on again, so they have to take another look at it tommorow. They didn't tell me what the CEL was. So i'm in the dark again. No idea whats going on. hopefully they keep having these problems and maybe i'll get a new drivetrain Swweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. (highly doubtful maybe, but a man can wish!)
