RWD tranny on fwd platform???

Ok well i was bored last night at work like always cause stocking shelves is no way amusing. I had a bright idea pop through my head. Everybody knows that our transmission can't handle 300whp with slicks. Does anybody think that it would be possible to put a RWD transmission such as a turbo 350(just an example of one) on our cars and keep it fwd. i know custom mounts, bell housing, axles and etc would have to be made but i was just wondering if the concept itself would work. you wouldnt have a differential so it would be like a true posi. nobody flame me for this but its actually a good idea to me and for people who are really wanting to get into 11's or 10's without worrying about transmission failure.

It's not a transverse case design (meaning it turns around). The trans would stick about 2 feet out of the left side of the car.

no it will not work, end of story. For starters they are way too long, rwd trannys don't have a differential assembly in them, and there are alot more reasons that I don't have time to list.

You should go look under a vehicle that has a rwd tranny and then you may understand why it will not work better.

and for the price of that you could just wonder on down to a dealership and get yourself a solstice/sky/s2000/camaro or mustang and not ruin a new car

Yes, unfortunately, sounds like a good idea but physically impossible.

But not as bad an idea as that kid who said he was putting a 350 in his balt!

350 V8, that is.

You could definatly put a RWD tranny on this car, and still be FWD. All it would take, it streching the front end a foot or so, and flipping the engine around. Then it would look something like this

actually this is a cobalt built off of the GM build guide. if you look in the actual build guide they use the same automatic trany that is in the 2.2L cobalt's. You should read up in there, tells you how to make this trany ready for 1400 hp and there is no gear changing involved, just better trany coolers, upping the line pressures, new stall converts and new trany pan because of the tilt of the engine because of the big ass turbo

I think that word is relative, to a person's idea of their own car.
You may say I ruined my car, but I say I didn't.
It's my car, so whose opinion really matters the most?
Mine.

actually....its not.

They used a 4t65 in that car. The Cobalt has a 4t45e.

Anything can be done with time and money, but to put a RWD tranny on the cobalt just isn't realistic, from an economic or practical standpoint

Yeah, what Kritter said.

For example, you could put a 454 in a fwd cobalt. You'd only have to make an offset gear or chain drive to connect it to the tranny. And extend the front end about a foot or more. And build a real frame in there to hold it together so the engine wouldn't fall out.
And then when you dumped the clutch the exploding parts would probably kill ya!

Again, you could do it but it sure ain't practical!

aight well i searched about that and theres not much posted up about the tranny and how you can put it in our cars. i think that it would be a great idea to put that tranny in but does anybody have any information about putting a 4t65 in our cars???? not sure if anybody has ever heard of ipttrans.com but they sale kits for you to be able to buy higher stalls and better internals for alot of cars. i know its gonna be quite a bit of work but the tranny would be alot stronger then our 5 speeds. we would then be able to run slicks and not have to worry about blowing trannys up.
