dissassembly of taillights?
dissassembly of taillights?
I want to make a mod on my inner 2 taillights that requires taking them apart... When removed and cleaned off it seams they have a sort of super-tough plastic thats holding them together.
I tried the baking them in the oven @ 200 degress for about 20 minutes, but they were still solid, i couldn't budge them.
I even, for a brief moment, tried using a dremel to get through it, but quickly put it away as that didn't really seem like the way that i wanted to get in there.
Has anybody else ever taken your taillights apart before? Or could anyone recommend a way to do this??

aye.
i know the key to which you seek.
It's quite simple actually...that hard plastic you're reffering to is actually a type of sealant much like RTV. you'll need to remove it to pull the inners apart. a small flathead screwdriver will work well for this, but the blade of it must not be wider than the space between the housing and lens or it will certainly crack the lens.
Bake the inners at 210 degrees for 10 minutes, only one inner at a time. remove from the oven and push the flathead into the sealant. Begin "prying" out the sealeant by gently twisting and wiggling the screwdriver so that it slips under the sealant as you go around the unit. It should come out in somewhat large chunks. Reheat if need be.
The outers are the same way:

Hope that helps...
