im sure it has to be a burner...not just a rom..cuz its the burner wavelengths that would cause it to emit heat....and im sure there is a distance requirement...but its prolly along the lines of 5 feet or so! deff. worth the effort!!!!!

Pretty cool, I might make one myself.
Just do yourself a favor though guys, don't hit anyone in the eye with that laser. It's got to be powerful enough to burn unrepairable black spots onto their retina.
Just some friendly advice.

Aha! Something I finally know somthing about. A CD burner uses IR like a tv remote so you cant use it but a DVD burner uses a 550-560nm diode which is red and are usually rated around 150-200 mW. But those DVD burner diodes are ment to be pulsed so dont expect any great mialage, they will burn out fast. Here is my aresonal of burning lasers...

2 125mW green lasers, 1 150mW red laser, 1 2mW yellow laser and a couple less powerful ones. They are all strong enough to light up a cigarete except for the yellow. You can check some out at wickedlasers.com if you really like em...

I might sell some or swap em out for parts

If you get some mirrors spinnging you can get some crazy effects!

Thought I would share

ROFL dont have time to go get sugar? just put baking soda in the freezer for a day!

yeah guys it has to be a 16x dvdrw laser diode. ive built one before a while back. and the distance all depends on how powerful the laser/setup is. if you really wanna know how to do it go to laserpointforum.com something like that. my friend and i built one a while back and we burned the projection screen at our school.
