How long are factory brakes lasting?

My car has about 58,000 miles on it now. I've noticed the front brakes starting to squeak a bit sometimes. Anyone else replaced their brakes yet? I'm surprised they've lasted as long as they have. Should I buy GM pads for the next set, or do most pads last this long? I've never had such a small and light car before, I'm used to changing brakes every 30k or so.

I just changed my pads when I installed some new rotors. I have 35,000 miles on the car, and there was still alot left on the pads. Since you are hearing some squeaking, you might as well take off the wheel and check the pads. Its probably about time to change them.

depends on how you drive. I've seen brakes go out at 20k and I've seen brakes last to 70k.

It doesn't really matter what brand you use for pads. I'd reccoment using ceramic pads though. Metallic tends to glaze under light braking(since your pads have lasted you almost 60k, I'm guessing you do alot of light braking)

At 58k you're on the upper end of their expected lifespan, so yeah, you're about due for new ones!

Buy some rotors and pads.....even if there is still life. They're not as efficient as they used to be.

I agree on buying some new pads... but he could just have the rotors turned. I mean... there's not much point in changing the rotors everytime he does the brakes

I have been to the track (road course) a few times and have done a few auto-x's and still have the stock pads and rotors w/ no problems, just turned 27,500

last time on the track I was lapping w/ a prepped 944T that was running slicks and after about 15 mins, I had severe brake fade... I am going to get stainless steel lines, high temp fluid and see how much more I can get out of the stock pads

With hard driving and some racing I usually get about 50,000 out of stock pads

when the stock pads go, I'll just get the rotors cut and get the HAWK green pads (those are the HP street ones, I think).

brake life depends on how you drive, most people use the brakes more than necessary

yikes, 58? Mine wereshowing "Normal Wear" at about 35 when I got them changed. Go down to advanced auto parts or something like that and get the ceramic brake pads. I got them for 40 bucks. Beats the dealer cost and on top of that the factory brakes suck and cost way too much.
