auto to manual? whoa.

Hey guys.

What's involved in an auto to manual in our Cobalts? I'd just use the normal Cobalt 5 speed, then juice it up from there. Using the normal transmission should keep it easier I'd assume. If I keep this car over my 4 year loan period, I couldn't stand it being an auto. My car is a 2006 Cobalt SS n/a 2.4 as indicated in the signature.

I just need a basic explination / cost ballpark or even a link would be sufficient.

Sorry, I'm in school, so I don't have time to pull a search.

Probably not worth the effort and expense IMO.

I would turbo it, and swap with a high stall torque converter.

Halfcent has a lot of knoledge in this area.

call me crazy but i always thought it was much cheaper to have a manual set up... plus if its what u like to drive, go manual...IMO i wouldnt consider a auto for an SS...S/C or not...with the right components you can make an auto tranny faster in drag conditions, but you wouldnt want to drive it daily...wouldnt work out too well...i dont know the exact prices tho sorry
good luck

It's cheaper to buy from the factory.

To do a swap will be expensive.

That's what I figured. I mean, I've put in a tranny or two into Honda's...but I don't know much about GM 4 cylinders just yet. I'm still converting. However, I would've much rather gotten the stick, yes. But my mom said I had to get an auto...so bit the bullett and got it becasue I loved this car. That's the problem with being 17 and your mom letting you buy a NEW car. Oh well.

But yes, the auto is good for constant launches. Actually, I don't mind the fact that it's auto. But I just loved to be on the highway in my Honda, up in 5th, then just droppin' the gear and flyin'. Ahh...the joys of a stick. But my CRX will be done soon. So that'll get my stick thing outa the way.

I'm just nervous though. I mean, I like the stock SS exhaust, but I want a tad more tone. But my friend has a bigger muffler on his auto and it sounds retarded. I put a Dynomax on my Monte and I love it. Who knows?

Sorry to ressurect an old thread but it's better than making a new one.

Does anyone know if the SS S/C Tranny will bolt up to the 2.2L ?

PS it's cause I use the SEARCH button

Is the s/c one different than the normal one? I'd assume it's slightly stronger... Like for the Monte supercharged, they use heavy duty components. It's normally cheaper to just buy the components individually than to actually buy the whole thing new probably. That's what I'd assume.

I mean is the bolt pattern the same? and yes the 5 spd from the SS is strong and has tighter gearing than the 5 spd from a 2.2L

I know for my old Z24 auto I bought the B&M shift enhancer kit. It was wired for the Camaro, but the wiring in the Z was close enough for it to work like it was supposed to. Maybe you could check that out?

Yes, you're right about automatic transmissions doing well with turbos on the track but I don't understand why it wouldn't do well daily driving...

The reason I'm asking why you think this is because I HAVE a 2.2 ECOTEC Automatic that is turbo'd and I have absolutely no problems with it transmission wise. So how do you figure it wouldn't do well?

Automatics drop a gear as well...might even drop down 2 gears if you're in 4th and doing a certain speed.

The sound of your friends exhaust has nothing to do with his transmission.
