clutch
when you step on the gas, and you're car is not acceleration, but your rpm's are going up your clutch is slipping. the rev's don't drop very quickly because of the heavy flywheel. if you let the clutch out a little quicker the revs will drop faster. but you'll know without a doubt when your clutch is slipping. you'll hear the super start whining like crazy when you're not moving. dead give-a-way
yeah. mine does it all the time..
... usually when i take off normally, then floor it in first.. ill spin through first then when i shift.. boom.. clutch slippage.. you'll probably smell it too.. kinda stinks.. haha
With my recently added St.2, the clutch immediately started to slip.
But for now at least, it only slips when shifting aggressively between gears.
If I floor it in any individual gear, no slippage at all. But if I shift up to the next gear and then quickly stomp on it ... slippage.
That's telling me that it's probably on it's way out. Am thinking about a Spec 2 clutch as we speak ...

If your having clutch slip on the stock clutch with less than 270hp, its not the clutch. its your driving.

well thats just a ballpark number.
there are guys running more than that on the stock clutch without a single issue.
people all to often assume its the cars fault when it doesnt do what they want
but most of the time, the car is just doing what you tell it to.

- I owned an '04 SRT-4 for a year and a half that I drove the same way --- no clutch problems.
- I also owned an '06 Focus ST for a year that I drove the same way --- no clutch problems.
And I even occasionally power shifted both of those cars --- with no clutch problems.
So now I have a car with only 4k on it (my other cars had at least twice that many miles) and I'm already starting to experience slippage?
C'mon guys - admit it. To have a clutch this finicky where you have to "shift at this" or "shift at that" means that the clutch on our cars suck.
Also, I've previously had over a decade's worth of drag racing experience running 5L Mustangs, so I'm guessing that I'm pretty darn familiar with how to shift a car.

i'm in the same boat as you, but i admit i'm a crappy driver. My car has 5k and when i power shift into 2nd the clutch seems to not grab right away. It's probably my timing though and i just suck
That's my opinion ...
Ive had this argument quite a few times.
im not going to continue it, because generally people take it the wrong way.
but id like you to consider this.
why are so many people having no issues at all, with far more HP than you have? on drs and slicks?
and why is it, that theres 2 catagories of people who do have problems.
1. young people, new to stick, who are to hard on a car they dont know how to drive yet
2. older guys, lots of experience, who are set in their ways, and dont realise that not all cars drive exactly the same.

It's just that you have your opinion, and I have mine. You think that I'm wrong, and I think that you are wrong. Simple as that really.

Do a search on this forum of the word "clutch" in the Issues/Problems area. There are like 70 different threads that come up.
So who is not having problems now?

- why are there people who refuse to face the undeniable fact that our car (when driven the exact same way as other vehicles in it's class) have no problems what so ever with premature clutch slippage?
PEACE
Please, I'm trying to be serious here.
As I said, 69 threads in the Problems and Service section alone (and that's only doing a search of threads where "clutch" appears in the title - I'm sure there's a ton, ton more).
https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/sear...archid=2583649
might only be 58 people. but i think you can see the trend quite easily.
yup 69 threads.
and about 63 of those are young kids, who just tried to race, and fucked up the 1-2 shift, smelt clutch, and got scared.
just because people post a thread about a fucked clutch, does not say that the clutch was faulty.
most of the time it was because they roasted their clutch off.
next point?

i'm going to give some input here. I have a 2.4 so i've never owned the 2.0, i've driven them on ocassion but i can tell you this: being a member here for almost two years its undenyable the clutch IS an issue on the ss/sc regardless of the driver.
There is no point in arguing it, frank is right, its a piece of ****. You drive a cobalt "super sport" so the ******* clutch should be able to handle the abuse of reasonable launches. plain and simple.
Now i assure you in some aspects, an0malous is correct too. I'm sure the durability of the clutch has a lot to do with the driver and their skill, but with such low miles on a clutch there is no reason it should slip, even if you were a shitty driver. Hell, i learned to drive stick on my 2.4 and i've never had a clutch problem (until i supercharged my car). The stock lsj clutch is not the proper clutch for the ss/sc.
not a day goes by on this forum where a slipping clutch is not mentioned.
that is all

The only "trend" that I can see here is one where only the people who are happy with their clutches or who have babied their cars even bothered responding to that thread.
That's what I see ...

Quite frankly, I simply don't believe half of what you're saying anymore.
just because people post a thread about a fuc**d clutch, does not say that the clutch was faulty.
And vice versa then, just because 1/20 % of the people on this forum answered a poll saying how great their clutch is doesn't illustrate that our clutch is a good one.
That's a very poor observation.
most of the time it was because they roasted their clutch off.

Please man, give it up already ...

But trying to get some other people on this forum to realize this simple fact is quickly turning into an act of futility.

On a side note: Yesterday I spoke to a guy at work who was a mechanic before he became a Firefighter/Paramedic (he also owns/drives many performance vehicles).
As soon as I explained my problem to him, he immediately said "Looks like it's your Pressure Plate ... there isn't enough clamping force being provided by the pressure plate".
He told me that if I ended up buying an aftermarket clutch, that he would install it for hundreds less than the dealer would charge me (he said he's already done dozens and dozens of clutch jobs on FWD vehicles).
I'll keep everyone posted ...
(P.S. I hope I haven't offended you anO, that wasn't my intention. Looking forward to talking to you on other threads ...)
