Cracked transmission housing, how noticeable?

How noticeable would it be if your trans housing was cracked, would you know immediately, in a day, in a week or months?

Please let me know your experiences.

Thanks

Usually you'll notice a loss of fluid and/or gears will start to grind a little from low fluid.

Severity and location on the housing. I mean if you recreated the grand canyon on your tranny, then probably hours before you notice. A hairline crack some obscure place you might go months without noticing.

No I've never hit anything, i've just noticed the shifting is getting a bit rougher, nothing terrible, just different.

I have had wheelhop mods including trans bushings and TTR mount well before this, so I haven't wheelhopped in a long time..

I guess I could look under the car, It's been to the dealer twice to look under the car and they haven't mentioned anything about a crack. I think I might be paranoid.

So any advice? Where should I look when I get under the car, will most cracks be visible?

Check for any signs of obvious leaking

check your axles... the seal around the axle and trans is prone to leak if you have done a lot of burnouts or even wheel hop will make them leak..

if it was me.. only if you cant sleep about this issue..

i would go buy some d4 redline atf fluid and pull the allen headed cap to see if there is any fluid there.. there is 2 of them one for draining and one you open up when you fill the trans you know its full when it starts to run out the inspection hole...

just get under and look for fluid. if its wet try to follow it up and see where it is coming from.

haha yellowshowbalt we had a guy at work with a 8 valve golf put a hole like that in his trans, the guy filled his trans with axle grease and patched the hole with a soda can that he jb weldedin place! guy drove it that way for like a month till he could buy a new trans. f'in great.

I found out right away. Then again it cracked completely in half and dumped gear oil over the whole road. I was driving normally too. Damn Nissan!

Just a couple questions - I see you're in Canada - did you ever change your tranny fluid and what have the temperatures been recently? Did the symptoms start when it started getting colder.

Only reason I ask is that sometimes extreme cold will alter the tranny fluid (make it thicker) and make it more difficult to change gears. Royal Purple is the absolute WORST for this, but even stock fluid will do it. I notice in my car when the temperature gets colder it's a bitch to get it into 1st gear, even after the car has warmed up sometimes.

Other than that look at any visible surface on the tranny and look around on the axles for leaks.

how in the world does one crack a transmission housing anyways? I've never heard of this problem before.....

burnouts and drag racing? i see a lot of SS/SC's around here that do those kind of things. I'm not one of them.

Does shifting get rougher based on outside temp. and humidy. I had a car that shifted like **** when it was humid or cold but when warm out it shifted like butter. The Cobalt is a little like that, but not to bad.
