The 2.4 Supercharged - 10,000mile review!

I've been supercharged for 10,000 miles. There were a few bumps in the beginning, but we got them all sorted out and anyone that wants to M62 their 2.4 has alot of the bugs ironed out for them.

Car began stock, with oem intake, header and exhaust and at 9lbs it put down 224whp/211tq. The car now has RD Fabs 3" intake + ZZP mid-length header + ZZP 2.5" dp. No new dyno numbers yet, but it looks like next week I will get you some new numbers. Pushing for 250whp on the stock pulley.

Anyways, what I wanted out of the build was:

1) Minimal downtime on the car - I drive 600-700 miles a week
2) Reliability
3) Inexpensive
4) More Power!

We succeeded in all of these areas. I strongly encourage you to contact SMG Motorsports if you plan on moving forward with the setup.

Update next week with new numbers!

I'm currently in talks with another member for all the parts off his 2.0 sc car for my 2.4 sedan and I'm curious as to what this SMG motorsports can/will do for me and where are they located? Hell ANY info you could offer would be awesome. Thanks.

They're located in central Massachusetts. I sent you a PM with some contact info. Fred's getting ready for World of Wheels in Boston this weekend, so he's busy this week...but I'll see him next week and mention you.

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind whn I get to that stage. Right now I'm in the planing stage. Once I get SOMEONE who can get this computer flashing down right then and only then will I start to gather and buy the parts I need. I figure no point spending all the money on parts if noone can tune the damn thing!

Mechanical stuff. I snapped a bolt in the block, but I got it out. Intake manifold had to be ground down in one area 1/4" to fit perfectly. Idler bracket had to be ground down to fit. Bypass valve was limiting my boost to 2psi...soon found out that the bypass valve is not needed to be hooked up if we don't have an electronic solenoid that limits boost like the LSJ's do. Wideband was giving me crazy readings.

As far as the tune, not really sure. I didn't do the tuning. Initially it was tuned around the MAP. The final product had a TMAP and MAF tune (both plugged in). MAF had to be relocated to other side of car.

Awesome to hear you guys got it running and reliable as a DD.

Pioneering projects such as this can really drain you emotionally and financially. PpAzZ1101 had such a short fuse while we were working on his turbo setup, pretty much the reason he got banned from the forums. It really pays off in the end though having one of such few.

that sucks...no ignorance meant but...do you beat on your tranny or no? seems odd the trans would just take a **** that quick...they are proved to handle some extensive power

I dont abuse the tranny whatsoever. Second gear showed no sign of struggle until a few days ago, i have almost 40k on the car and all of the sudden it just wont even engage now. third gear is grinding but i can usually double clutch it on the upshift to get into gear w/o grinding.

Talking Well I finally got it on the Dyno...

I was a little dissapointed in the numbers, but the good news is I nosed over on timing without any KR. So this means more boost is in order...

Anyways it's hard to read ( I will re-scan it tomorrow) but the little HHR made 255 HP and 234 TQ with the 2.0 huffer on it, 227 & 207 was my starting point.

Sorry to hear about your trans Beck, so far the auto seems to hold.

Jim

My second went after 35k with only bolt-ons and a tune. The new trans feels MUCH stronger then the first one did even when it was just off the lot.

Looks like 255whp/234tq to me. Pretty nice numbers. Is that with the 2.7/60's and E85? Those are the numbers I hope to get with intake/header/dp. I had 12.5% drivetrain loss on my stock dyno. Auto is probably around 15-18%. If you're getting 15% drivetrain loss you're making roughly 293 crank hp. Numbers seem kinda low still, for what modifications you have.

Yea 2.7 11-12 psi (depends on the day) and e-85.

Maybe my blower isn't as tight, or maybe the E-85 tune isn't right yet. All I know is we couldn't make it KR with 25° of timing and above that it lost power (see last pull).

I leaned it out until it stopped gaining, but I'm sure there are a few ponies hiding in the Ecm somewhere. I'm thinking 2.6 or maybe 2.5 pulley and/or a 50 shot later on.

BTW I only had two hours on the dyno with it so far
Jim
Besides...it's a wagon....
