cold=belt noise?
cold=belt noise?
My 06 cobalt s/c has a funny noise coming from the belt everytime I first start the car. I have had 2 dealerships look at it, the first one just put lube on it and called it good nothing changed the 2nd dealer changed the belt and gave me **** for the dealer installed stage 2 kit but after a 10 minute disspute with the tech they covered the belt but no change-still squeaks! I just hit 36,000 miles so no warranty left.....is this normal when it's cold out?
check and see if the noise is coming from the belt or from one of your pullies...
I had a 2001 Ranger that did the same thing... squeaked like hell when it was cold... turned out to be the tensioner pulley going bad. I had to take it to 3 different dealers before I found a mechanic who knew it was just more than a bad belt.
My suggestion... get in there with a can of WD-40 and see if you can find out which pulley is squeaking.

Last year my car did this at 20,000 miles but it steadily got worse.
I thought it was a loose belt and didnt think anything of it til this weekend and the dealership told me they never heard of it before but sure enough... tensioner. It used to only squeal from a cold start but then progressed to all the time. $495.00 for the tensioner, belt and labor. Car is at 38,000 miles
16,000 miles = passenger window slower rolldown than driver
17,000 miles = 2nd gear grinds occasionally
19,000 miles = squeal from cold start
25,000 miles = air conditioner overflow leak in to the passenger floorboard
35,000 miles = squeals all the time, 2nd gear REALLY bad(pops out sometimes)
I have noticed the cel light showing up more often because of hard driving with the squeal so be careful if you have a supercharger.
The air conditioning problem chevy can not fix. It is a fact. Just use a vaccumm cleaner and clean the hole out or do what I do and use a dremmel and bore the hole out 50% larger.
Hope it helps
Well that sucks! Right when my warranty runs out..... I wish the dealer would have just fixed it right the first time, I even told them that I thought it could be the tensioner...Well at least now I know thanks man.
I purchased an extended warranty to 100,000 miles 4/year for 2,000
205 down and 78 a month i think for 24 months
Was better than paying for a new syncro+tensioner issue that is going on.
365 for the syncro of 2nd gear, 900-1100 in labor
250 for the tensioner, 55 for the belt and 200 for labor on that squeal
Only catch about the warranty is i have to drive it another 1000 miles and wait 30 days.... easy enough
god this car is satan
The dealer said that it is not coverd and now my radiator is leaking......I luv the car but damn! I'm thinking I should have went with the RSX...I know I could have went a least 40 thousand miles without a problem, but then again my last name is murphy.
Did they give you a reason why it wasn't covered?

The dealer said that after the 36,000 miles your S.O.L and that it not covered by any 60,000 mile powertrain warranty...but on a good note my car stopped leaking antifreeze. I think that I should flush the system so I called a radiator shop and they said GM coolant is not what it cracked up to be and that I should changed to the green stuff....but the dealer said only the orange colored gm type coolant because it is 6 year 100,000 mile coolant, any thoughts on coolant options?
Yep they have a 3/36 bumper to bumper warranty just like the 07-08's . The difference between the newer cars is the 05-06 have a 60/60000 mile powertrain warranty and the 07-08's have a 60/100000 mile Powertrain warranty. The new GM warranty while being promoted and hyped to all end really only effects the cobalts by giving them 40000 miles of extra powertrain warranty. Not saying its a bad thing .... wish i had it but.... its not a bumper to bumper thing .
