Rattling Sound FINALLY found!
K I know there has been numerous threads about the notorious "rattling sound" that hits around 2-3k rpms in first and second gear and somtimes while idling....That i know of no one has been able to find out what it was, some guys said it was their cat and come said it was their flex pipe..... Well it was rattling alot yesterday (didnt rattle all winter) and it was driving me nuts! i got home and parked in the garage. i was JUST about to turn the car when all of the sudden i heard that damn rattle! now i have NEVER been able to get it rattling at home so i was stoked! i got under the car and it sounded like it was coming from the cat.....WRONG i grabbed a thick cloth and pushed around on the exhaust (noticed it was shaking a bit) and BOOM the rattle stopped... once i stopped pushing up on it, it started again... so the REAL reason for the rattle is the exhaust is positioned so that it JUST barely rattles against the bottom of the car. the reason why it doesnt rattle at WOT is because the pressure pushes the exhaust against the body enough to make full contact
So the guys who got their cats and flex pipe replaced: the reason it stoped after it was replaced was because the exhaust was taken off and repositioned either directly in contact or away from the body
Clif notes: The exhaust is rattling against the metal body around where the cat is, simply reposition the exhaust

well my exhaust doesn't really rattle, more like "bangs" on the car. it's sux and it's been to the stealership twice for it, but when I'm WOT or during acceleration (doesn't have to be much) you can hear it every so often, and then when you let off the gas.....it sounds disgusting. I can't seem to get the dealership to fix it, but at least i'm not the only one with the problem. I'll have to take a look at it myself.
I think you have just explained my rattle to a tee! lol. I'm going to put the car on a hoist and check out the exhaust to floorboard gaps. 2700 rpm rattle most noticible when shifting gears in 1st and 2nd that sounds like tin or a heatshield flapping around......yup, I think that's it!
