Wheel hop turning
Wheel hop turning
07 Cobalt SS SC with an Ingalls torque damper, DC Sports strut bar and GMPP touring exhaust. I have used settings between 11 and 14mm. First, this is only my second FWD vehicle and the first one with power. Overall, the torque damper at 12mm has virtually eliminated wheel hop going straight. However, on wet and dry pavement it will hop a little when I jump on it and I'm turning. It seems to be a little more when I turn right than left. The tires are the stock Pirelli's. Can I assume this is normal? My buddy who knows less than me thinks it's partially caused by the strut bar, but it doesn't sound right to me.
Please bear with me, the last performance cars I drove were before kids in the 70's, so all of this FWD performance is new to me. I forgot how much I missed it and I'm glad Chevy got into this market. Thank you in advance.

Does your car have LSD? I really can't say that ive had any wheel hop while turning . But then again i've never spun the tires while the wheel was turned much or at all.
I always thought it was too hard on the car to spin the tires while turning.

If I accidentally give it too much gas when making a hard corner, the fronts will spin some, but not hop. I have an Ingalls set at 10mm and no other traction or suspension mods. Tires are Dunlop Direzza DZ101s; 225/45/18. And I have G85, if that helps.
Yes, it does have limited slip, and I should have noted that. I usually don't get on it real hard from a stop (with an immediate turn), and I was just curious if the torque damper would work. Also, FWD still seems a little weird to me, but it's okay now that the torque turn seems to be gone.
control arm bushings will help you eliminate wheel hop at first, but after a year or two of use the polyurethane will wear away and you'll have to get it refilled or replaced otherwise it will have a lot of play and you'll easily have wheelhop again. I just replaced my control arms with new factory ones because my bushings have deteriorated.
most of the wheel hop is created from a torsion spring action of the weak axles, GM is supposed to come out with new axles that will fix this. I believe they are the same as the 2008 cobalt SS axles except they are machined with different length and spline due to the different bearing a knuckle components.
