Mine makes a clicking sound for about 1 to 1.5 seconds after initial motor firing, only during cold start-ups. Sounds more destructive than direct injection...

As for the car "ticking" after you turn it off, it's the metal cooling off and expanding from the turbo/exhaust. Somebody obviously dropped out of school...

that's totally the high pressure fuel pump.

it's noisy enough that 2008 & early 2009 CSS's had a recall to install an insulating cover ~ to quiet it down some...

I get the exact same sound. I kind of feel like I hear it once I get out of the car. Not exactly right after I shut it off. I almost feel like it has something to do with the car balancing out when I get my fat ass out of the car(240lbs).

the sound aaron is referring to is common with cam driven pump when car shuts off i have yet to research the technical term or explaination i have the service manual on order upon finding out shall report back. now in regards to valvetrain these cars im noticing that these cars are very noisey and that people tend to point fingers at the fuel system, from my guesses we tend to over rev the cars and damage the valvetrains, the cars cam phasing abilities then start to manipulate timing to compensate for weakening valve components eventually resulting in drastic driveability issues or the car looping like it has a cam. now i imagine everyone on here never over revs there cars and are perfect drivers. im just not that guy...lol

my two cents

The loud clicking noise is the fuel injector. The fuel pump is high pressurize and since the cobalt tc are direct injection and really doesnt need high pressure. GM said this is a normal condition and to dont replace anything just for that noise

One Question though..

Its got a loud tick to it especially when it starts up, after a few minutes it get quiet but its still there. The A/C isn't on. I remember reading somewhere that this is normal, but is it really and if it is what is it?
Yeah, everyone i've ever heard ( including mine ) does that! i thought it was a problem at first and was flipping out, but its the direct injection just ticking, it does away after a while of running it tho.

Sounds like a normal lnf cold start to me. Let it warm up a bit and go into closed loop. The sound will sort of calm down a bit and turn into an "oscillating" clicking at idle, in 1 or so second increments.

Well even so at 89k it would be best to change those parts anyway or by 100k.

Defiantly sounds like good advise it failed emissions with p0013 told him how to fix it using forum inst for exhaust solenoid but he's taking it to the stealership asked him to ask about the timing chain tensioner hopefully he does that utube clip I captured from the car is freaking me out.. could it be like a broken rocker or vavlve spring or would it be even more gnarly sounding? Thx
