ABS sensor wiring getting cooked.

Hey everyone,

I couldn't easily find another thread about this, but you might want to check your car too. I just bought my 3rd Cobalt SS/TC and I noticed EVERY other SS/TC had the same issue going on to various degrees. I looked at four other cars before I bought this one, so a fair sampling and one was even a 2010.

Attached to the cowl is a pair of wires in split tube loom. Here is a picture from one of my 2009's I bought new. Nicely loomed still and tucked up in the cowl above the turbocharger.

This is my "new to me" 2008, and what pretty much every other Cobalt I looked at in the year 2014:

The split loom has totally disintegrated and the wiring is drooping and cooked to the point of being extremely brittle. This pair of wires goes to your right front ABS wheel sensor. Should it totally fail the ABS system would just puke and you'd have to fix it then.

So... you might want to check yours too. My intention is to replace & re-route this wiring a little better through the cowl and cover it in fire sleeve. The middle christmas tree holder thing has totally separated from the plastic cowl piece from heat on my car too.

It's very common its been covered lots of times it happens on every car you might want to check the rest of that plastic stuff it takes to get brittle and break in different places but that is usually the first and the worst right above the turbo and exhaust manifold
You don't have to reroute it you can just get your covering of choice you can either just get some heat reflective tape or spend a little bit more money and get wire wrap boots to cover it dei heat reflective tape seems to work just fine mines been on there for over a year

I just noticed that when I did my last boost leak test. I was going to pick up some heat shield tubing DEI makes and wrap the wire

Honestly pretty much all of the split loom on my car is falling apart, meanwhile my 18 year old Honda's looks original almost. Even my wifes 10 year old 1.8T GTI isn't anywhere near as bad. Apples and oranges I realize but alas.... the best of "the old" GM Like its turning to powder.

At some point I'll pull the engine harness (which I realize this isn't a part of) and reloom the whole thing I suppose.

This is what I plan on using to cover my replacement wiring: JEGS Performance Products 32010 JEGS Thermal Heat Sleeving - Free Shipping on All Orders @ JEGS

Maybe it just bugs the **** out of me since I had two of these new heh. Things get old.
