another newbie question..difficult to get shifter into R

I'm wondering if the car we just bought has short throw shifter...throws are very short and its hard to get in reverse...need to push it over to the the right hard and then something clicks and then you can pull down into reverse...is this normal for stock shifter? Is it more difficult to get after market shifters into reverse?

I can do it but the wife cant get the car into reverse....

thanks

You are pulling the lever on the shifter up and then moving it all the way to the right and back. Correct?

On the shifter itself there is a little button/ lever underneath the shift knob that you needs to pull up on with your 2 fingers in order to be able to shift into reverse. Hopefully this is the problem you are having.

so the stock shifter requires to pull the thing up underneath the shift knob? It works much easier now...we looked and manual and it said nothing about pulling up the shifter to get into reverse

thanks

Yes its called a reverse lockout. It is to prevent you from accidentally slamming it into reverse. Glad to help

when I first got my ss I even knew about the reverse lockout, and I still forgot to pull up on it lol.

It's something that the majority of cars are implementing these days. I'm surprised you were able to get it into reverse at all without pulling up on it.

had to get used to it, 98 passat i had to push the whole shifter down to get into reverse, this car i have to pull up on the ring. old 99 silverado had no lockout, you'd think a 4wd v8 would have a lockout
