Bike or New Cobalt ss/tc
Get a 1000 if you want... dont listen to people. First bike i ever drove was a gsx-r1000 and i had no problem handling it. Half of the people telling you not to get a 1000 have probably never drove one. Dont get me wrong 600s are FAST...but alot of people are too scared to take it to its hi revs to actually get power so they feel its not enough.
The new 2008 Gixxers come with some program called S-DMS with gives the driver the choice of what power output he wants. Ex.
MoDE A: the full 599cc motor running at it's best performance possible.
MODE B: Dampens throttle reponse, say- for town driver and you're not caring to blow by with the flick of the wrist.
and
MODE C: the engine output get set to the idea of riding a 250cc bike. Very in short, is very newb friendly.
Araldo, it's not a matter of you learning on the 1000. Its the point of a lot of not 'needed" power. I'm the only kid in my group of friend (22 of us) that does not have a bike. Three of them started on 1000, and one of the has a shattered femur and severely strained back muscles.
If you have never ridden before. Do not get the 1000. You don't need it. Get the 600. Nine times out of ten, the 600 looks exactly like the 1000, but with one less muffler.

The biggest (and best) control method is always the brain... unfortunately many new young riders lack the brain part.
yamahas suck on the street, plain and simple, you have to keep them strung out to stay at a normal pace, they are a track bike with blinkers, and need to be on the track. Hondas are my bike of choice, and everyone i know that owns one, loves it. Face it, they win all new comparisons every year and keep getting better. I would say beyond the new horrible cosmetics of the 1000RR, the 1krr is the best bike out there for the 1000 class. That being said, i havent read enough into the thread to see if you are an experienced rider. You do not need a 1000 unless you are very experienced with street bikes. A 600 will satisfy your needs and much more, plus scare the sh"t out of you quick. I say go with the 600 rr 2007 or 2008. Perfect bike. AND WEAR GEAR, DONT BE A SQUID!
and if you get a bike, dont bother getting a 600, youll drive it for 1 month, after that, youll want more power, a 600 seems fast at the biguening but youll want more ! and more! its not the same trill. get at least a 750 or more.
Every R1 I've owned or rode has been amazing to ride.... I'd say comparable to my buddies 1000RR... and a notch or two behind the Gixxer.
i bet the guys on here telling you to get a 1000 have never rode before, or they are squids that ride in a straight line and try to look cool riding more than the enjoyment. ha, it makes me laugh. Go to cbrforum.com or another bike forum, dont decide from cobalt owners. Ive rode for 3 years on a 600, and dont want to go up in cc's. It is the perfect bike. 1000s pull up into a wheelie even if you dont want it to, and is fast quick. please consider something lower than a 1000 for a first bike. Yes, some people do have enough self control to take it very easy on a 1000 and learn on that, but the fact is once you twist that throttle, you will want to go faster, and your judgement will get you killed. also take the MSF course if at all possible in your area.
yes i have rode an r1 and it was not for me, on the track i would say it would be a great bike, but they are uncomfortable and too puny midrange for me

like you said, depends on selfcontrol, i did ride my 600 for 2 month before i changed it for a 1000, and then i got tired of the shitty ride of a sport bike and sold everything, iwent to test drive the yamaha MT01 the other day, that bike is awesome, probably my next bike

Wife wanted a new car, so we made a deal. We bought a yellow 08 SS/TC (completely stock) and an 07 Busa (totally modded) and love them both. Just don't like the payments.
