Brake Wear
Brake Wear
I just had my winter tires put on and the shop informed me my brakes showed significant wear and should be replaced very soon. They then gave me a quote for $750. My car is just over a year old and only has 22k km's on it. Is the shop crazy or do I need to expect paying 750 yearly for brakes? wtf?
that doesn't sound right at all. how would brake pads cost $750 even in canadian money? I'd check them myself and if they looked like they need to be replaced either take it somewhere else or do it yourself.
The SS/TC is notorious for chewing rear brakes, almost all of us have run into the issue. My dealership replaced my rear pads and turned the rotors under warranty at 18,000km, they should do the same with yours.

The price sounds off unless they're including rotors, pads and labour, but even then still a little high imo.
22,000km on a performance pad is about right; sure the TC has been known to chew up rears, but there's no way you can be expecting 50,000+ out of a performance oriented pad. Now if your rotors are chewed then yes, this is a significant problem like Force said, the dealer should replace under 30,000km I thought. Did they happen to mention if they're wearing evenly?

I'd be willing to bet good money that your situation is much the same. If so, GM should warranty it. Besides, $750 is too high. My dealership told me it would have been $600 all-in if they hadn't done it under warranty.
I'm putting my snows on this weekend so I'll snap shots of my inside pads and rotors; car currently has 16,000km on it. As best I can tell the wear is even and the pads are still intact; inside rotor is no more worn than the outside...but it could be an entirely different story when I get the wheels completely off instead of rolling around under my car with my head shoved into the wheel
.
Mine got warrantied because of uneven pad wear, Calipers seized on sliders. When I took it in I made sure they knew I'd inspected them and noticed it. If you want a good upgrade though r1 concepts has a good deal on pads and rotors. I got mine put on a week ago and they are excellent!
I think I got lucky with my brakes. When I changed over to the winter tires (about 15,000km's on the car at that time) that pads look like they still have a fair bit of meat on both the inner and outer and there's no significant scoring... Maybe it's an assembly issue?
The uneven wear is the main concern. My inboard pads were ******* toast in 17,600km, the outers were fine. The rotors had significant grooving.

Put my winters on today, outboard pad probably had around 5-6mm left. Inboard pad had 1-2mm left. Think this is bad enough to actually get somewhere with a warranty claim? I have 23,000 miles on the car. Other side of the car wasn't quite as bad. Maybe 4-5mm outboard, 2-3mm inboard.

the same thing happened to my 08 ss/tc with only 17000kms the rear pads are worn right out and the rotors are warped to **** and meanwhile the fronts aren't really even worn at all they wouldn't warranty them wtf the front should always wearout before the rears thats where all your braking force comes from and I never use the e-bake just for parking and maybe three times for a good burnout like i drive mine pretty hard but the rears wearing out is bullshit and even one dealer charged me 60$ just for looking at them because they say it wasn't warrantied and another dealer didn't charge me anything to look at them and they said it was from aggresive driving but still and my rear tires were bald but thats just because they were on the front and the front were bald to ..As a joke I asked them so hows about my tire warranty lol I got a good laugh about that lol.......I think i'm going to talk to a gm rep about thses **** ass brakes!
