Bypass valve issue?

This just started 2 weeks ago. If I'm making a pull in 3rd gear as soon as I hit 5,500 RPM the bypass valve ( a Forge) opens and then car just loses all boost as you would expect. Might as well throw out a boat anchor. The car pulls good and strong until then and once the car loses boost if I rock my foot off then back on to the throttle it'll boost again right to 5,500 again. Haven't made any changes to the tune since July. Only thing done to the car in the last few weeks have been the addition of an Interceptor and an EGT gauge. Until the car started acting this way 2 weeks ago it would pull strong right to 6500. No codes at all. I did replace the evap solenoid 2 weeks previous to this issue starting.

Oh, I don't hear any breakup that would make me think the rev limit was 5,500. No misfires logged. No KR. Car runs perfect to 5,500 then the BPV blows off.

I don't know of there is an issue with the Forge or if that's a symptom of something else.

I have taken the Forge off, inspected it, lubed it, and put it back on. Seals were fine, spring was fine. Wasn't sticking. Made sure to orient it properly when it went back on.

Any ideas?

Change plugs using new stockers (should come pregapped at .035) and put your stock BPV back on. See if that works.

I hate the Forge. Some people can get by without maintaining it but I had to constantly remove, clean and lube it again. I used the same lube Wangspeed said he used on his in an old thread but still a huge PITA. Stock BPV > Forge IMO.,

Good luck. Hope it gets resolved soon.

Plugs are recent, though I could change them out. I hadn't had any problems with the Forge till just recently and it's been on the car for a year now. When I had it off to inspect it I used high temp synthetic to lube with with before assembly, making sure not to over lube it.

The thing that's getting to me is that it is exactly at 5,500. I'd think if the Forge was sticky it would be at certain boost level or something like that, wouldn't it?

Have you checked for codes or logged yet? Just because the MIL isn't set, doesn't mean you don't have codes.

Yes I did check for codes, and found none but no I haven't logged. I don't own HP tuners but I do have the interceptor and Torque. I'm not sure if either one would be helpful to log with. Do you think so?

Yes, it's worth a shot. Start with MAF signal, your lower MAP, KR, misfires, LTFT, and STFT. Not sure what exactly you can log w/ Torque. Post-mortem is the best way. Trying to look at numbers while driving is hopeless.

You're right on that. I'm not so good at it that I'd trust myself to read the output and control the car at the same time. It's just strange that it is 100% repeatable. At exactly 5,500 RPMS on the tach, boom, BPV sounds off, boost gone.

Just a crazy thought, the announciator in the Interceptor couldn't be an issue could it? It's set for rpms, 6500*, above. I first noticed the issue when I was checking to see that the announciator setting works. I guess I'll unplug it and see, won't I? I thought they were read only?

Ran it without the Interceptor plugged in. No change, as expected. I can tick that mental box. Checking to see what kind of logging torque can do.

Will do. Thanks John.

Hey, I finally had a problem where I didn't come begging you for help right away. Extra credit for that?

Rocker cover cap off with the motor running. Hmm. I don't know. I can try that over the weekend. Would popping off the oil fill cap achieve the same thing? I'm assuming you're trying to see if the PCV system is an issue or blow by of some sort?

Post your mods. This sounds like a possible boost leak.

Have you put a stock one back in to see what it does?

What's the tps sensor say when this happens at 5500 rpm?

Have you tried slowly accelerating to 5500 gradually to see what it does?

The mods that might be part of the problem
K+N intake
Forge BPV
TurboXS charge pipes hot and cold
TurboXS catless DP
Treadstone TR8 FMIC
3 bar sensors
Tune by Term2
EGT gauge - probe mounted in exhaust manifold about an inch before the turbo

The mods that likely are not, but to be thorough
Pedders
Interceptor
Powell tow hook front
Powell Hardcore
Powell Rotate mounts
Rack spacers
TWM shifter, cable clamp, base bushings
Resonator in place of the muffler

Don't have a stock one to put back in. Accidentally left it in Washington.

Not sure on the tps. I'll check that tomorrow. When I ease it up to 5,500 with no boost or load and see what that does. Good idea there.

Keep us posted.

Also check the little solenoid that's on the intake manifold that connects to the bov. It may be faulty.

No Warren. I got this done in July. Last winter I was on trifecta. FWIW, I was also in a very different environment out there in Seattle too.

Frogs you're not talking about the evap purge solenoid, right? I can't remember off the top of my head which solenoid goes o the bpv. The evap purge was replaced 3 weeks-ish ago.

Thinking about this some more.. The vacuum line to the Forge: If I were to plug it would I expect the forge to always bypass or never bypass? I'm not positive about how it works. I winder though if plugging that hose would be any kind of a test at all?

Ok, got it. Is there a way to test it somehow?

Personally I would make sure the plug is connected securely and flush. Make sure the vac lines are all in good shape ie no kinks and what not. You could even try buying a new one and seeing what happens. I don't want to advocate throwing parts at it but keep that in the back of your mind if the other things don't pan out.

My first initial thought would be to get a stock bpv and see what that does. I'm sure Mongorat has one for cheap.
