Cobalt SS Turbo Will Become The Next Eagle Talon!!
------------I Know exactly w ur talkin bout......and i kno a guy that had a TSI in POS status...95 i believe but i always told him i liked it, turbo DOHC AWD 4wdisk IRS? aand i think its even 6spd?...maybe im tripping on that last 1 but...i always suggested he converted to RWD "now who the hell else is gonna have that?", i said. alas he traded it 4 a gs mitsu WHY? and he feared the (tsi) would quit but the rings on that FWD are the ones that quit-IRONY.
far as the cobalt? that salesman AINT lying. cobalt is juuust short fr perfection. I tell evry1 there are only 3 things wrong w the cobalt; ITS FWD.......ITS A 5SPEED......AND IT HAS A SOLID REAR AXLE...........FLIMSY looking sonofabitch-does anybody make a tubular piece?replacements????

Luckily we're not as bad off as the SRT4 guys. A large chunk of the SRT4's made are out of commission due to total outs or blown engines.
I had a 1998 Eclipse turbo. I will never own another Mitsu after that car. What a hunk. I don't understand why so many people like those cars. You guys keep talking about AWD, but those are so rare that you don't even see them anymore. Might as well go with a VR-4 if you like that kinda stuff. 6 cylinder twin turbo AWD ftw.
I would see that happpening to the balt in 5-10 years when it becomes more accessible to younger crowds ... just like any other performance car for that matter...
But seriously ATM the SRT-4 does that job ..

It's sad but true. The SC's are damn near there already. Too many teenagers have the SS/SC now. They are already cheap 5000-9000$ range. It sucks. But I'm not getting rid of mine anytime soon. 1. I love it. 2. I'll lose too much money on it
So I'll keep it running and looking nice.
I think it should be a law that fast cars should be above a certain price range.... Its a rediculous how little you could spend to pick up a fairly fast car. In my day when fast and furious had just come out and I just got my drivers license, we had the following options for cars less than 15,000$ used or new.
civic ex
98'-01' hyundai tiburon (RD) beta motor
nissan sentra/200sx
dodge neon
cavalier
85' mustang 5.0 (the big bad fast car you could get cheap - however insurance was rediculous. 400$ a month for a 17yr old.)
I mean you see the trend here?
Lets see what can kids find now adays for $15,000 or less
05'-08' cobalt SS
03'-04' Infinity g35/350z
porsche 944 turbo
srt4 neon
lancer evolution VIII
03'-06' Wrx
03'-04' Wrx STi
Sentra SE-R Spec V
240sx/RX-7/a whole slue of Mustangs and swap the motor with 2JZ/ SR20DET/ RB25DET/RB26DETT - yes you can probably get a car for well under $15,000 with those swaps if you look around or do it yourself even.
Whole slue of mustangs.
I dont need to write anymore... My teenage childhood sucked when it came to getting a fast car.

I dont really get the comparison. Not everyone purchase's a car with the intention of keeping it forever just to preserve it. A lot of people grow up, move on to something different, or what have you. Like when I got my ss/sc, I was excited about modding it and doing things to it, but now I care less about putting another dime into modding the car and I'll probably end up buying a nice 4 door automatic car cause Im not really into the tuner thing as much anymore. So, I'm sorry but I dont understand the rant about what someone else does with their car.
This is 100% correct lol Fast cars growing up seems like they were harder to come by

thats exactly what I said in my post, lol.
Hey I JUST goT an excellent IDea! Everyone trashout your cars sooooo bad that no kid will want them! stain the seats smoke in the car, put cigarette butt burns on the dash! wreck the motor to the point where it will keel over any moment! lol.

In the defense of the OP, I agree!
Back in the day, the Eclipse was a very slick looking car. It had large open wheels with brake rotors that are exposed. The large spoiler was very nice and aerodynamic looking.
I wanted a GSX AWD for the longest time but it was discontinued soon after. IIRC, it had a 200 hp 2.0L turbocharged 4 banger, not very state of the art by today's standards but it was respectable for the time.
I made sure to buy the SS/TC before it was discontinued because it reminded me of the pre-00 Eclipse.

ok, bust there's nothing you can do to stop someone from buying a fast used car, so why bother. I'm sure people said the same thing about the grand national, cyclone, typhoon, mustang, 5.0, camero, and ect before so..
Yes THERE IS something you can do. If you have to sell the car, sell it privately and well over-priced. If a kid is trying to buy your car, tell him to come by your house, alone, and bring whip cream.
If an adult is trying to buy your car, ask him if its a graduation present for someone? If he replies "yes/no, its for my son/daughter" raise the price of the car $5000 more. When he asks why you raised the price, tell him "Supply and Demand my friend, Demand just went up."

Here's the problem with this entire thread:
The Eagle Talon was never a "marvelous" car. It was a piece of **** Mitsubishi Eclipse. Poorly built, poorly designed, ugly, crappy materials, unreliable engine, horrible wiring and components, and very poor brakes and miserable handling.

The 4G63 motor that was in the Talon, Eclipse, Laser and EVO was used in one form or another by Mitsubishi from 1989-2007. You don't use a motor for 18 years if it's a unreliable, poorly designed, poorly built engine. In case you didn't know the EVO won a **** ton of rallies with the motor. The 4G63 is a very good motor especially for something that came out 21 years ago. Guys where pushing huge numbers out of these motors and still are. You slapped on a boost controler, intake & exhaust on to your 200hp Talon and you could easily have 250+hp. Sure the interior wasn't top notch but neither is the SS/TC's (don't get me wrong I love my car).
Poor brakes and miserable handling?!? Have you ever even driven one? For god sakes back in the early 90's there where very few cars that handled better for anything near the price of the Talon, by todays standards yes but during the Talon's time it handled very well.
As for the unreliable bit they were reliable until like the OP stated it changed hands from the 30 something with a career to the 20 something with a good job to the high school kid with a part time job. I know quite a few first and second gen talons that were modded properly and have ran for years without issues. It's when that 16 year old cranks the MBC all the way to the plus side, slaps on an Apexi SAFC to try to spark tune for it and drops the clutch at 5k do these things start falling apart as any car would.
As for the OP I totally agree with you that the SS/TC and even the SRT-4's in a matter of a few years will start winding up in the hands of high school kids and that's when these things will really start to break and get a shitty image.

I'm sure someone will really do that, especially, if they are really trying to sell the car or in a lot of cases some people just need the cash. The last thing on someone's mind that may sell the car for financial reasons is if its gonna get wrapped around a tree the next week or if the person that now owns will abuse it
Your driving down the road in your new porsche (we'll say) and your remeniscing about that cobalt you owned and decided to sell a few weeks ago. But wait! Whats that! Its the cobalt you used to own driving down the oncoming side! Yes! Your excited, you got to see your car from a new point of view. Its a very exciting feeling! And the most dreadful thing happens, you realize you just inadvertantly killed yourself as your face gets planted into your windshield slash front bumper and hood. (because the car crunched so bad that you would still hit those things even buckled saftely in).
The kid you sold the car too was 17 years old and loved to go from party to party getting that pootang in the back of your old cobalt cause all the girls love it and it just so happens that all those parties are serving alcohol to minors. You wake up the next day, wow a miracle! You survived!!! but wait something is wrong... something's different. you reach down and to your surprise you have no *****! they had amputate it from the horrible accident even though theres not a scratch on the rest of your body.
You sir, have not killed yourself like you originally thought... .youve done worse. You've cut off your own *****. Now you sit at your computer trying to fwap, but can only jiggle your ***** around which is definately not the same thing. Enjoy the rest of your penisless live. good day sir.

1) in the older evos, correct the DSM 4g63 was used. But in the Evos that came to America, it is a different 4g63. Basically the same setup, but tehre are differences in the build quality, drivetrain etc. Hell the 9's came with Mivec AND the belt is even on a different side than the DSM ones. But yes they made pretty decent power very easily. No doubt there.
2) Eh, even back then they were good, but not reliable and stellar by any means. Thye FWD applications handled better than the AWD ones, and the hondas of the time also better handled.
3) Dude even back then, they were always tearing down. The drivetrains were weak and cheaply made. And hell, people 'downgraded' just to get the better parts. I.E. 2g owners got 1g coil packs, the 7 bolt 4g63 crank walked like a **** so the 1g 6 bolt was better, the 1g had better aerodynamics and was lighter, etc. The best cars of the time was the unloved Galant VR-4's, imo. They were a bit sturdier built.
4) Yeah i agree, but at the same time..i'd rather see all the ss/tc's crash and burn before getting to these dumb **** kids.
It be the top thing on my mind, lol. Lets do an "imagine this" scenario:

And to say they handled well is just blasphemy...have YOU ever tried taking hard corners at speed with one of those things? ****, my old Blazer was more stable than my 97 GSX.
PS...to anyone pondering purchasing an old DSM for a "project"...be warned...you're in for one hell of a ride financially...and emotionally...because the second you fix one thing...something else breaks.

2) They were not stellar that's for sure but they weren't bad for reliability until they were modded and improperly maintained.
3) I agree with you there the 1g was the better of the two generations especially the 93-94 cars (like my old one
4) It's inevitable eventually there will be 16yo punks driving around agressivled tuned SS/TC's thinking they are the next Schumaker on our streets. It's a scary thought.
I hate to say it...but you are way the hell off. I've owned plenty of DSMs...one of which was a pristine condition 97 Eclipse GSX with low miles and was owned by an older gentleman. Guess what...that piece of **** broke just as often as my old and abused ones (and was significantly more expensive to repair as well). The 4G63t engine was a great engine no doubt and will be missed by many...however the older DSMs did NOT by any means have the configuration as the EVOs of America. The problem with the old DSMs was that the engine was rotated 180 degrees and they had to add extra **** to make the drivetrain rotate the correct direction to put it as simply as possible. Combine those extra small parts with weak differentials, an awful transfer case and a miserable transmission with poor spline configuration and you had a great engine that was strapped to one of the most poorly designed drivetrain setups...ever. Trust me....DMSs are FTL and luckily for the consumer, 4-5 years from now when you can pick up an SS/TC for 10k...they will have a platform that is much more durable and well designed to start with.

If the car was properly maintained and not driven like a stolen car they were not that bad. From all the ones that I knew the ones that had the most issues where the ones that where beat to ****, imporperly modified and driven by people that thought dropping the clutch in an AWD car with a stock drivetrain was at 5k RPM was cool.

1) Hence why I said "in one form or another". Yes the 4G63 was different between JDM and USDM and different from car to car (DSM, EVO, Galant) however it was basically the same engine.
2) They were not stellar that's for sure but they weren't bad for reliability until they were modded and improperly maintained.

). And I'm pretty sure the VR4 never made it to North America.

2) Eh, even stock they had reliability issues. They weren't reliable. They looked good, preformed well, and then broke.
3)And yes the Galant VR-4 did make it to America at least. I know Canada got an off shoot of it though.
4)
