Cobalt SS Turbo Will Become The Next Eagle Talon!!
Im so glad I posted this thread about the Eagle Talon! I knew it would stir up a lot of buzz. I read every single reply that has been written with excitement but there are some things that need to be clear up.
here goes......
I owned a Black 1998 Eagle Talon TSI AWD(the car of my dreams) for 4 great years. When I bought it, it had 60,000km on it which was very rare even in 2004. I purchased it off of the original owner who was very sad too see it go......I mean sad!!! He told me he was glad to see it go to an enthusiast, ya know, someone who more about the car than anyone else. I drove it all year round and it treated me good with only a few minor everyday problems. All the time I would get guys come up to me and compliment my Talon saying "wow this these things are rare in this shape" and then they would tell me about their Talons. In a time where Hondas and Toyota reigned supreme, the Talon was a rouge car that the main stream didn't like.........at all!! The Talon was an AWD Turbo monster that was made too race, not do loser laps around town like civics. I was forced to sell my beloved talon in 2008 only because I had to get a truck. At that point it had 156,000km on it and was still running very good with no rust. I swore that id buy another ASAP( one that wouldn't be a daily driver and I could just keep forever). Well.....two years later, I just couldn't find a Talon that was worth buying. All I found was a bunch of worn out money pits that were far past their prime. So I started fresh with a 2008 Cobalt SS/TC. I wont let this one get away from me.
So.....a few things to point out. Talons were not crap cars. YES they did have their mechanical problems but a lot was from neglect and abuse.
Next.......SRT-4 NEON, Honda preludes, CRX, Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX or Cobalt SS/SC are
al become ratty, abused, neglected and worn out due to this one simple thing.
"nobody loves you like your mom does and nobody loves a car like the original owner or the guy that put in the wrench time".............simple!!
once a car changes hands a few time(especially into the hands of a 16 year old) the neglect begins......period
Cars like the Cobalt SS/TC and the DSM twins are way too fast and way too cheap, therefore after so many years have passed, anyone can buy them and they do. Then you get the midnight cowboys who try to be like Vin Diesel and tune their car when they have no clue. So then those already rare cars become hack jobs and molested freak shows doing loser laps.
I closing.......talk to anyone who was the original owner of an Eagle Talon TSI AWD or a Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX. They will tell you with pride of the superb performance and the sheer fun it was at the time kicking Hondas ass n the streets with zero problems because they actually took care of the car(and so they should, they paid full price, not $8,000). Then talk to owners who were third, fourth and fifth in line............ya they have no one to blame but themselves.
For me.....I was a second owner of a 1998 Eagle Talon TSI AWD. I was pasted down a mint car in showroom shape by an owner with pride. Because of that the Eagle Talon will go down as one of the best cars i've ever owned, driven and put the pedal to the metal with.
Thank You all!! Cobalt SS/TC for ever!!!

My '08 TC was the first car I've bought new, as a result I plan on holding onto it for as long as physically possible. Even through a wreck assuming I survive and it's got any salvageable parts I plan on holding onto it. When it dies (which I'm sure will be sooner rather than later since it's a DD going on 50k miles already), it will be rebuilt.
It's going to happen eventually, but by then, all of ours will be supa-fast!
Also, all in all, even if I was super rich, I'd still want a car like this, the SRT-4 is easily my favorite car under 30k, maybe even 40k, (If only the damn focus RS was in america.)
I got an SS cause I knew it wouldn't be breaking down while my signed the form
Btw I'm 19 and I've owned 3 cars, So, maybe I'm one of these ricer kids :P

another friend has a scion tc the he turbo'd but got fed up with it so unturbo'd it
rx8 putting all new clutch fly wheel shifter and some other stuff in tomorow
trd supercharged scion tc sold for mazda protege speed
pretty stock srt-4
a 2003 v6 mustang hes doing a 5.0 swap on right now is just lacking a wierd sized bolt for tension pully
a little toyota truck lifted about 3 feet with a cummins diesel engine
none of them have stupid stuff on there cars no body kits ridiuclouse wings or anything of the sort we arent the kids who mess cars up but take care of them and aint stupid it will be a while before the cobatl ss is down to that level though thats when the trashy kids get them
btw 3 of my friends paid for cars and all mods by them selves so we are not rich kids by any means what so ever
so its not always a bad thing for your car to be driven by younger people to be quite honest many of you on here have no business modding your cars like this alot of you are grown ass men that need a life if u spent half the time on your car on girls more of you might be married its one thing to do some modding but to make it your life is dumb if your going to do that then get a drag car or a restore project something thats not going to end up in the high school parking lot
One important thing that may just be the salvation of cars owned by youth everywhere is the internet! Now, instead of just doing stupid **** because they think it will look cool or cause their friends do it, teens actually get on forums and research a little. When I turned 16 my first car was a Honda Prelude SI 4WS and that thing would have ended up riced out to the max if it werent for message boards. Instead, I actually learned quite a bit about the car and was able to get some good hands on experience (including doing the H22 motor swap). The guy I ended up selling it to said it ran like a dream, and as far as I know its still out there cruising along today.
yah what this guy said u cant stop it and im 17 me and me friends are all into tuning one of my friends has a 08 civic si he plans on super charging

Good wrenching goes a long way
I've owned a few older used cars over the years. Most showed signs of careless, or shoddy workmanship. My recommendation to anyone planning a project on their car is to take the time to do it right. Think about what you want to accomplish ahead of time, what is needed to accomplish the task, etc. But most important, careful attention to detail is imperative! I have an old, beater Nova (plus my '06 Cobalt) with a 283 that I was able to get to run high 12's in the 1/4 mile without a lot a trick stuff. Actually it is (was) a mostly stock motor. In doing so I "listened" to the car talking to me and made the mods that helped it come alive.
So do your homework and take your time; the results will be worth it.

You sir have no idea what you are talking about and here is why:
The 4G63 motor that was in the Talon, Eclipse, Laser and EVO was used in one form or another by Mitsubishi from 1989-2007. You don't use a motor for 18 years if it's a unreliable, poorly designed, poorly built engine.

In case you didn't know the EVO won a **** ton of rallies with the motor. The 4G63 is a very good motor especially for something that came out 21 years ago. Guys where pushing huge numbers out of these motors and still are. You slapped on a boost controler, intake & exhaust on to your 200hp Talon and you could easily have 250+hp. Sure the interior wasn't top notch but neither is the SS/TC's (don't get me wrong I love my car).
poor brakes and miserable handling?!? Have you ever even driven one? For god sakes back in the early 90's there where very few cars that handled better for anything near the price of the Talon, by todays standards yes but during the Talon's time it handled very well.
As for the unreliable bit they were reliable until like the OP stated it changed hands from the 30 something with a career to the 20 something with a good job to the high school kid with a part time job. I know quite a few first and second gen talons that were modded properly and have ran for years without issues. It's when that 16 year old cranks the MBC all the way to the plus side, slaps on an Apexi SAFC to try to spark tune for it and drops the clutch at 5k do these things start falling apart as any car would.
1990 Eclipse GSX for sale(?)
FWIW - My mom is the original owner of a red 1990 Eclipse GSX. It is a bone stock California car with about 60,000 original miles on it (no joke). She might be willing to part with it someday. We keep trying to talk her into selling it, but she hasn't been able to part with it yet. I think about $7,000 might do the trick though. I plan on keeping my SS/TC until I can sell it at the Mecum Auction in 2030 for $75K (ha, ha).
wow a 1990 Mitsbishi Eclipse! i owned a 1990 Eagle Talon TSI AWD and I loved it. ive it another 10 years and your mom will truly have a collectors item not found anymore..........serious, it will be worth something
Same, easily my most favorite car I ever owned, even over my GN. Contrary to what most people say mine didn't have major engine problems or break downs, although I only got as big as a Big 16g on it. Still it was the most fun all around car I ever owned.
i havent really read through this thread but i got the car when i was 18, yes my dad helped me with the loan and what not but im paying for the car in full. im not a rich kid, my car is mostly stock right now till i get a second job due to the car payments. let me know if it looks riced out? haha
i guess when their parents have money, it gets alot easier. But honestly most of your friends don't have the age or experience to be driving cars like that. Another reason cars like the talon went to ****, the lack of experience and skill of driving of the younger guys driving them.
2.driving epierence? im confused cause if your talking about the manual part we (me rx8 srt mzda speed si and 5.0 and turbo'd scion) we all rode dirt bikes from age like 10ish we all live around the lake which dries up in winter and the maxda speed kid raced go carts the ones that take turns at like 60.....for the driving part none of these were their first cars we all had piece of **** for first car so where else do u get this "driving expierence"
3. none of us have ever been in any wreck that was their fault
4. my friends are much better drivers then many older people i know
5. and they arent rice **** i can send u pics or links to their page that has pics we even have an anti rice page making fun of rice cars around here(the si is on there making fun though)
6.not rich we live in jefferson city tn hick town look it up any questions pm me or look me up on face book Bo Carroll 17 jefferson city tn
I wonder if older people than me will have this same conversation when I pick up my grand national, and I'm almost 30 lol I can hear it now, you're only 29 son, you don't need to have a car like that..
It be the top thing on my mind, lol. Lets do an "imagine this" scenario:
Your driving down the road in your new porsche (we'll say) and your remeniscing about that cobalt you owned and decided to sell a few weeks ago. But wait! Whats that! Its the cobalt you used to own driving down the oncoming side! Yes! Your excited, you got to see your car from a new point of view. Its a very exciting feeling! You could tell it was your car because the rims were painted black, and it had the EVO front bumper mod. You knew nobody else in your area owns a TC and that that was your car. Then all of a sudden, your old faithful cobalt vears into your lane at 100mph. And the most dreadful thing happens, you realize you just inadvertantly killed yourself as your face gets planted into your windshield slash front bumper and hood. (because the car crunched so bad that you would still hit those things even buckled saftely in).
The kid you sold the car too was 17 years old and loved to go from party to party getting that pootang in the back of your old cobalt cause all the girls love it and it just so happens that all those parties are serving alcohol to minors. You wake up the next day, wow a miracle! You survived!!! but wait something is wrong... something's different. you reach down and to your surprise you have no *****! they had amputate it from the horrible accident even though theres not a scratch on the rest of your body.
You sir, have not killed yourself like you originally thought... .youve done worse. You've cut off your own *****. Now you sit at your computer trying to fwap, but can only jiggle your ***** around which is definately not the same thing. Enjoy the rest of your penisless live. good day sir.
